wwolf Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 There are some errors about missiles in the encyclopedia, like the mica. The speed of this missile is not mach 2.5 but mach 4, and the G limit is +50g, not 18g. The magic 2 pull 50g, not 18, and the speed is mach 2.8, not mach 2. ;)

Silver_Dragon Posted June 29, 2011 Author Posted June 29, 2011 Sorry, image server war phaser out A interesting news — Air forces can draw two lessons from NATO’s ongoing campaign in Libya, say industry and defense officials: Seek small*er precision-guided bombs and stockpile more of them. Manufacturers at the Paris Air Show reported growing demand for the smaller, low-collateral*damage munitions used against targets in Libya’s cluttered urban environments. And, they added, a rush has been on to reorder more since raids began in March. “It has been a surprise for mili*taries that, in June 2011, NATO is involved in a medium- to high-in*tensity conflict that will last no one knows how long, not far from Europe, where a significant number of munitions are being used,” said Antoine Bouvier, the CEO of European missile maker MBDA. “The lesson is that medi*um- to high-intensity conflicts can start any time and come as a sur*prise to the best experts.” The Royal Air Force and French Air Force have ordered restocks of various weapons. The Royal Danish Air Force, whose F-16s have dropped more than 500 precision munitions on Libyan targets since March 20, are run*ning so low that the government is now in talks with the U.S. and the Netherlands to buy Paveway 500-pound bombs, 2,000-pound Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAM), and AIM-9X air-to-air missiles. The Italian Air Force, which flies Paveways and JDAMs on its Tornado fighters, has not yet placed reorders. One analyst said Libya had caught air forces with limited inventories on hand. “There has been a wider trend over the last two decades for small to medium air forces to order fewer munitions,” said Douglas Barrie, military aerospace fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. “The enduring lesson of Libya, which is proving to be long and drawn out, may be a reconsideration of stocking levels.” Orders Soar Sagem, which, as of last year, had received French orders for 1,430 armement air-sol modulaire (AASM) guided bombs, is now working quickly to supply more. French Rafales typically carry six of the munitions on Libyan sorties. “We had an order we needed to fill very fast following the start of the Libyan opera*tion, and we are speeding up production,” said Jean Pierre Rayssac, a military business development director at Sagem. Kristin Robertson, who runs Boeing’s Di*rect Attack Weapons business, said JDAM sales had increased dramatically since the start of the Libyan conflict. “We have quickly responded to a distinct increase in urgent orders for both JDAM and Laser JDAM since the start of operations,” Robertson said. “Our team has supported rush contract orders for approximately 2,000 JDAM tail kits and 200 Laser JDAM sensors for six countries, on top of our cur*rent production orders for the U.S. Navy and Air Force.” Bouvier said the company had stepped up the pace and quantity of deliveries of its Dual Mode Brimstone missile to the RAF since hostilities began. “We have had some reorders since the conflict started and we expect more to come,” he said. “There is a critical impor*tance to having the right inventory that can last in this kind of crisis without risking a shortfall.” But while Boeing’s Robertson said her company had “more than enough capacity to quickly deliver additional JDAMs” if nec*essary, MBDA’s Bouvier said the Libyan op*eration had revealed that his company, and its customers, needed to fine-tune their abil*ity to deal with urgent and unforeseen needs. “MBDA needs to be more flexible in order to be more prepared for surge requirements, while customers need to improve inventory, particularly of long-lead items,” he said. “We are currently assessing this with customers.” Smaller Is Better Much of the customer interest is in small*er weapons. “Smaller warheads are being encouraged by the greater precision possible today, the rise of counterinsurgency operations and political sensitivities involved in collateral damage,” Barrie said. “All these things were already happening but they have been very visible in Libya.” The RAF’s Tornadoes have put the Dual Mode Brimstone to nearly continuous use in the campaign, where the 1.8-meter missile’s “moving target capability has made it the weapon of choice for urban environments,” said Flight Lt. Mark Lawson, a pilot from the 9th squadron at RAF Marham. The Tornadoes can carry six Brimstones on two racks of three, although they cur*rently fly with one rack, plus the larger Pave*way IV 500-pound bombs. In the first week of Libyan operations, two Tornadoes used the radar- or laser-guided missile to hit a tank near Misrata, selecting the Brimstone in order to avoid wider damage to the city. Bouvier said MBDA had fielded a lot of inquiries about Brimstone at the air show, including from France, the U.S. and else*where. “The ability to destroy vehicles in an urban environment is a growing requirement,” he said. Sagem’s Rayssac said the French firm was already developing a 125-kilogram AASM. “There is a great need for the smaller ver*sion,” he said. “The company has had feed*back from the French Air Force about this.” Raytheon and Israel Aerospace Industries both announced new, smaller, precision*guided munitions at the air show. IAI launched its Medium Weight Laser Guided Bomb, a 115-kilogram laser-and* GPS-guided bomb, which will be marketed to Super Tucano-class aircraft operators in Africa, the Far East and South America. “A 100-kilogram bomb was our ideal trade*off between cost, carrying weight and ef*fect,” said Lova Drori, IAI’s vice president for business development. Drori said the reduced size of his product would render it affordable, even more so than such radar-equipped munitions as the Brimstone. “Radar is not the only way to hit a moving target,” he said. His munition could track a target moving at 60 mph, he said. Raytheon, which has delivered 350,000 Paveway systems to 42 countries, declined to comment on fresh orders resulting from the Libyan operation. But it announced a marketing campaign for a new, smaller Paveway at the show. The 250-pound model reflects “a desire for lower collateral damage and lower weight for UAVs,” said Paveway director Ricky Freibert. Available in GPS- or GPS/laser-guided ver*sions dubbed the GBU-58 and GBU-59, the weapon will weigh about the same as the new Sagem AASM and the new IAI product. The company has produced 250-pound Paveways for France, which flies them aboard its Super Etendards, which are now operating in Libya. “The market has now caught up with this concept,” Freibert said. “Not all customers need the bang of a 500-pound bomb.” For Work/Gaming: 28" Philips 246E Monitor - Ryzen 7 1800X - 32 GB DDR4 - nVidia RTX1080 - SSD 860 EVO 1 TB / 860 QVO 1 TB / 860 QVO 2 TB - Win10 Pro - TM HOTAS Warthog / TPR / MDF
