RigorMortis Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 Ok, here's my situation. I own a CH Products HOTAS setup with pedals Fighterstick / Pro Throttle / Pro Pedals. I rarely get to my desktop any more, which is in my den, but is set up to use my HOTAS just fine. However, I primarily use my laptop these days, which isn't in a good location for a full HOTAS setup and my kids might get ahold of it too. But really want to be able to play A-10c. So I ordered the standard X-52 from Amazon and will be here tomorrow. The one thing that concerns me is the potential sloppy centering, but most reviews I've read of the X-52 are from 2009 and earlier, so not sure if this has been addressed or not. Maybe there's other things I should be concerned about too. So maybe some testimonials from regular X-52 users good or bad? Thanks.
Atomic978 Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 I still use my regular x52 non pro and enjoy it allot. Never had any issues with it. If you have A good profile it works really well. I fly allot of sims and have for a long time. I got the saitek pro pedals as well so maybe that is why I have not had any issues because I don't use the twist in the stick. I am currently in no position to upgrade to a warthog so this works good for me. I have had my x52 for about 3 years and it still feels like new to me. So I have had nothing but a positive experience. I know others have not but for me it has already been a value for terms of life span of use vs cost. Good luck and hope it all goes well. If you need a profile once you get it let me know and I can let you try mine. =RvE=Atomic Alienware Area-51, Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 3.2GHz, 8gig Corsair XMS2 DDR2 Ram, EVGA SC GTX 570, Western Digital 1.0TB 64mb cache HD. Heli Shed Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 The key to the X52 is a good profile and with the A-10C, 'curvature' is a must when using this stick. I use the X52 pro and to be honest, i love it, and wouldnt consider paying what TM are asking for, currently in the UK for the Warthog. The gold solution however, is of course the TM Warthog, but if it's not in your budget, don't bust a 'bollock' (to coin a british friendly term) trying to get one. You'll be perfectly happy with the X52. The X 52 pro was upgraded from the X52 to incorporate 'double' springs on the stick after much feedback from the community in general about the apparant 'sloppy' nature. Like i said, i can't really comment having an X52 pro. My advice however, is to pm Jackbauer, and ask for some advice. He is a wealth of knowledge with regards to the X52 series and i`m sure will help you out with mapping and profiles, as will most of us of course. I merely point you to him for a starter. In summary, you'll love it. If money is an option (as it is for most of us nowadays), don't feel you HAVE to get a TM Warthog, even though it is without doubt, the Gold solution. good luck. bumfire Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 Yea, the x52 non pro version will do perfectly well, infact I think they are great sticks, a little on the light side but apart form that it is great for flight sims and with a good profile it becomes even better. Their is no real differences regarding the 52 and 52 pro, a couple things here and there but nothing that really seperates them and nothing that makes the 52pro worth the extra expense. I have one, I use the warthog now but I think my warthog throttle needs to be sent back so I will be relying on my trusty vanilla x52 to get me through the rma period.
Insanatrix Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 I have a X52 non pro version and it works quite well TBH. I have every HOTAS command mapped as well as some other just from in the game using shift modifiers.
EtherealN Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 x52 should serve you well, even non-pro. You just need to be a wee bit careful with it - I managed to crack the PS/2 connector to the stick, but that was entirely my fault. I didn't notice that I had managed to place the stick such that the PS/2 was resting on the wristrest of the mousepad, and when I then placed a bit too much force on the stick in a moment of furious activity the PS/2 was basically made to laterally withstand all the force my arm could muster. I'd be surprised if any connector would survive that. :P The only issue that really annoyed me with it was the buggy driver for the MFD on the throttle. Way too easy to crash it (in my case it was through naming key binds on the profile with names longer than the screen width) which then required a reboot. Keep binds short and keep your desk somewhere near tidy and it'll serve you well - considering it's pricetag it's a steal! :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Daniel "EtherealN" Agorander | Даниэль "эфирныйн" Агорандер Intel i7 2600K @ 4.4GHz, ASUS Sabertooth P67, 8GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1600MHz, ASUS GTX 560Ti DirectCU II 1GB, Samsung 830series 512GB SSD, Corsair AX850w, two BENQ screens and TM HOTAS Warthog DCS: A-10C Warthog FAQ | DCS: P-51D FAQ | Remember to read the Forum Rules | | | Life of a Game Tester
Ranger79 Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 x52 is a good setup, had mine for years, still working like a charm. The pro version is not much different at all. Scarface Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 I have x52 non pro for about 5 years now. It still centers fine in any application but the stick itself has developed some slop where the stick handle mounts to the shaft. It bugs me enough that I want a new one or a pro. Mind you it worked fine with no slop for probably 2+ years, and I have no rudder pedals so using the twist makes it get sloppy quicker. I use this profile. http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=58795
Xxx Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 I use an X52 Pro and Rudders. Agree whats been said re cost of TM Warthog and worry about the failures that have been reported. At 280 + British Pounds you want it to work spot on. X52 Pro is stable and has a great programming interface, that allows every Warthog function to be programmed. EtherealN, if you go into "Services" and scroll down to "Saitek Direct Output" and disable it, you wont have any more problems with the LCD on the throttle. Doesnt affect the operation at all and eliminates any quirky behaviour. RigorMortis Posted April 29, 2011 Author Posted April 29, 2011 Thank you. I did find that X-52 profile link and will give it a whirl. That's 80% of the battle when getting into a new sim, although I frequently like to make my own that way I get familiar with the controls and the stick. I got my X-52 yesterday and I can see how it feels "loose" when centering. A second spring would be nice. Anyone manage to do a mod to add a second spring or make it more rigid? I just can't justify the cost at the moment for the X-52 Pro, although it looks like the best low cost alternative to CH or Thrustmaster setup.' Otherwise a very nice HOTAS. Will have to get into A-10 perhaps this weekend. :D
pacotito Posted July 3, 2011 Posted July 3, 2011 the twist off lid from a stack of blank cds has a raised ring in the center. Cut that out put it between the stick and spring.
