Hi all! Noob here...:)

I'm currently using a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and I've decided that if I really want to do this sim justice I'm going to have to get a HOTAS setup. Which stick is the most popular / best? I know it's a subjective question, but please humor me anyway. I see TM has HOTAS Warthog, but that's a tad too expensive! Is there a cheaper equivalent?

I also want to get TrackIR and they appear to have two flavors: a version 5 and a version 4 Pro. For those of you who use TrackIR, which version are you running?

Thanks in advance!

You could try looking over at Saitek http://www.saitek.com/index.html

I think they have some affordable HOTAS set ups.

As for TrackIR, I'd go for version 5 because its the newest and has a few improvements over version 4.

Hope this helps :)

Welcome to the forums

If you have to decide between the two at first for financial reasons I would get TrackIR first then the HOTAS. I use the TIR 4 but I'm sure the TIR 5 is fine (I use the TIR 5 software). Get both at the same time if you can.

With respect to the HOTAS not knowing what you have to spend I would suggest you first look at the CH products if you can afford them, then the Saitek X52Pro. Or, you could save for awhile and get the TM Warthog which is excellent.

With the Saitek you don't need rudder pedals as it has a twist joystick but it can be a bit qwerky to do a coordinated turn. (just put in some deadzone and a curve)

Good luck...

I have a saitek X52, and if you spend enough time setting it up, it will be probably the best affordable HOTAS you can buy. There are several profiles for X52 on here if you need help, and I would be willing to send you my own if you wish, just PM me.

I bought TrackIR 4 recently and have no gripes. It has a few tracking issues sometimes, but for the most part those are preventable. If you have the money get 5, nothing wrong with the latest and greatest.

I think once you buy both of these your experience with DCS will greatly increase. I would not recommend this game to anyone without a HOTAS and TrackIR.

I switched from using trackIR 4 to using trackIR 5 a while ago. The newer hardware makes a very noticable difference.

In most games the increased resolution probably doesn't matter, but in DCS with the clickable cockpits it's much smoother and easier to click switches than with my v4 hardware.

Tracking issues (the occasional loss of your head position, trackIR software sometimes not sensing a game is running, etc) occur at about the same frequency to me with either version, which is to say they're pretty rare.

For the pedals, I just wanted to point out I got myself some Saitek rudder pedals for christmas but I don't use them in DCS A-10C (but lordy are they wonderful in Black Shark!). With SAS, the usage of rudders is so infrequent I'd rather just use my twist stick then bother plugging the pedals in everytime. Nothing wrong with having pedals, and they'd help a lot in a situation where you lose automatic stability control, but they are far from necessary in this sim as long as you have a twist stick and can get used to taxiing with it.

what Sarge said. and here is a link for purchase. CH is NOT expensive. Note that rudders are included in the cost..

I had the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro too. I couldn't afford the TM Warthog HOTAS so I went for CH Products and I'm very happy - very solid and the config software is excellent. I bought TIR5 at the same time (this sim is burning a hole in a lot of pockets!)

Thanks for the input guys!

The more and more I look at the Warthog HOTAS, the more I want! The problem is that both my 15 y/o son and I are both flying this sim and I'd prefer that we have the same setup so we can learn together and be on the same page. I'd feel guilty as hell if I had the Warthog HOTAS and didn't get it for him as well, and I'm not laying out a grand for this anytime soon!

Again, thanks for the input and I'll see you guys around...
