cfactor Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 (edited) Didn't want to wait for Steam to update. So figured out a process to install the patch over Steam (which was at version 1.1.0.7). 1) In your Steam Library, go to the properties for DCS A-10. Under the Updates tab, change it to "Do not automaticially update this game". 2) Find your folder for A-10. For example: My folder name: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\dcs a-10c warthog 3) Launch patch_setup_v1.1.0.8.exe 4) For the path to your game, use the folder browser GUI to navigate to the dcs A-10 warthog directory where your game is installed. 5) When you click ok from the folder browser, double-check to ensure it hasn't added a "New Folder" folder to the path. For example, when I clicked ok, the directory listed for the new install was: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\dcs a-10c warthog\New Folder Remove the New Folder so the path is back to: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\dcs a-10c warthog 6) When you click ok, you'll get a prompt "The Folder: <Your folder path> already exists. Would you like to install to that folder anyway?" - Click yes 7) When the patch completes - launch the game as you normally would Edited June 2, 2011 by cfactor Removed unneeded step - thx Qazme
Qazme Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 I just ran the updater and remove the "new folder" when selecting what directory to install too. Just picked "\Steam\steamapps\common\dcs a-10c warthog" as the directory.
FlyingBrick Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Thank you! Seems to have worked, Mission Editor is showing 1.1.0.8 but I won't be able to try any missions for a few hours:( Thanks again, sure beats waiting a week for the Steam patch!
Iceman2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 I'm not gonna install manually, there's also .ncf file which relates to game's installation
Qazme Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 I'm not gonna install manually, there's also .ncf file which relates to game's installation You mean gcf? It will be ok it will "patch" it once again and update the gcf file. Least games in the past have without issue. One thing I did notice the activation once updated, which is supposed to happen, moved me from 10 to 9 and ED said they had given us an extra activation.
Iceman2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 putting the patch atm .. uumm.. second thought.. have my original folder backed up
Qazme Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Humm no ncf file here for DSC:WH. No gcf either funny enough. Either way I'm enjoying my 1.1.0.8. If something fowls up I'll just reinstall it's not that big of an issue.
Iceman2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 yea, you can always get it back. A10_depots.ncf is located in Steamapps - just that I'm worried about with future Steams updates. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1365811
Qazme Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Yeah I would be too, however waiting and extra week, just means next time I'll be manually patching again anyways. If something in the ncf/gcf gets messed with all you have to do is delete it and steam will download another version. It's only 2MB......(I found it totally over looked it.)
FlyingBrick Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 I just played a mission for 1 1/2 hours with no problems. Shadows look great and my wingmen survived the mission! I predict a fun night ahead, better warm up the coffee maker :pilotfly:
Qazme Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Not sure if it's just me, hopefully it is, but patching the Steam version like this has broken multi-player with a "Integrity Check Failed" message. And no the old fixes from beta no not fix this one. SO I'm in the process of downloading the game straight from ED and seeing if the serial key works for it too. If so I'm done with Steam with this sim. So word to the others thinking of trying it, something to look out for. For what it's worth the single player worked perfectly.

Let me know if the STEAM key worked for the ED version. I'm looking to do the same.
Iceman2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Yea, not bad idea at all, don't like to keep Steam open anyway when playing, also not being able to create a working shortcut to game without Steam running..
Qazme Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Yes the Steam key appears to work. I think my computer is borked though. After installing 1.1.0.7 it launched fine, after installing the 1.1.0.8 patch it went all wonky. I think I still have things pointing to my Steam directory on the protection stuff for the sim. Gotta get rid of star force and reinstall yet again then I will let you know for certain. (The activation did work though, in fact it never asked me to activate, and when running the security stuff it said the license was still installed, valid, and activated.)
Qazme Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 OK confirmed, complete uninstall from Steam. Install via the 1.1.0.7 download from the ED site. Your CD Key is saved into the registry of your machine and the license is still active as long as you have not renamed your PC or changed the hardware. 1.1.0.8 patch installed flawlessly and you can join multiplayer etc. No more messing with the Steam version for me, thanks to ED for being cool and setting it up that way. Learned my lesson no more of their products through Steam!
Teriander Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Why don't they just update it on Steam also? So many people use Steam, such as myself. In fact I would have never even found this game if I hadn't seen it on Steam.
Iceman2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 (edited) Okies - thank you for your information - I guess I start downloading the game then :) They will update it, question is when... I NEED MY LADDER TODAY ! Edited June 3, 2011 by Iceman2011

Learned my lesson no more of their products through Steam! That was my experience as well. I am now running the 64-bit "clean" version without Steam patched to 1.1.0.8, it retained my product key. Once I confirmed that I had moved over all my modded .lua files for my dual monitor setup and Helios export (and that the key mappings were preserved in the \Users\%user%\Saved Games\DCS Warthog folder), I did the "delete local content" on the Steam version of the game.

What will happen if my activation reaches 0 (zero)? Will I have to buy it again? I'm already a 6 activations left, because I keep on reinstalling windows trying out different settings (32bit vs 64bit) to see what's the best frame rates for DCS A-10C.

Qazme Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 How can I save my logbook and keymap settings? Thanks! The guy you quoted above told you heh. "C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\Saved Games\DCS Warthog" folder. You will see in there a logs folder etc.
Iceman2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 First patched Steam version to 1.0.0.8 it asked activation code, like I guess it's was supposed to do. Didn't see any trouble with the game, however decided to download and put EDs original version, so uninstalled Steam version completely, installed version 1.0.0.7 and then patch 1.0.0.8 - Started game and it didn't even ask activation code again. All works well and no Steam in background when playing game. Alt-tab didn't work on Steam nor any community things, I guess reason is the 64bitness. No reason to keep Steam version installed when you can download the game from EDs site. Also possible future installations are quite nice if you already have the install package in HD.
