hi guys,

i would like to learn how to deal with decence systems.

For example, there is a target of 2 trucks and in the near area is a Strela-10. I dont see it on my RWR but as i close up, it fire a missile. What should i do? - drop flares or chaffs? and why i dont see it on my rwr? It there a way to avoid he's attantion or avoid sensors?

Usually such a missile hits my within of seconds. I was looking for a tutorial, or a explenation how to effective deal with all this threads but unfortunately found nothing of interest.

It would be great to hear of your experiance and know-how.

best regards

Stumbling upon a unseen IR launcher is a real nightmare, as you've experienced, and paulrkiii has said they are not delectable by the RWR prior to a launch.

Large amounts of flares and aggressive manoeuvres are your only hope in this scenario.

Often the only way to avoid this scenario is to fly above their threat range. IR threats have low / short threat ranges, when flying high(ish), say 13,000 feet or so you are out of range of most of these and if you do get launched at they are fairly easy to defeat, through turning away and climbing while releasing flares.

If you believe there is a signification strela / igla threat in an area... fly high!

Hey longbow,

Here is what I have come up with concerning your particular problem. First, Paul is exactly correct. Your Radar warning receiver will not tell you when you are targeted by an IR sam. However, Wiki gave me another hint which you can try.

Each 9M37 missile is 2.2 m (7.2 ft) long, weighs 40 kg (88 pounds) and carries a 3.5 kg (7-15 pound) warhead. The maximum speed of the missile is near Mach 2, engagement range is from 500...800 to 5000 m (0.3–3 miles) and engagement altitude is between 10 and 3500 m (33-11,500 ft). (The ranges define the zone of target intercept, minimum and maximum launch distances are longer for approaching and shorter for receding targets, depending on the target's speed, altitude and flight direction.)

Try attacking that particular system from an altitude of say 15,000'. You should stay well above his engagement zone. Remember that this will not help you against some other SAM site, but if all you are up against is a Strela-10 you should be able to overfly him safely.

This tactic is used in real life by A-10 squadrons after air superiority and SAM suppression has taken out the obvious other threats.

Hope this helps!

Thank you very much,

this are very ínformative hints which i will follow up. Next i will do is to try fly an higher altitude to see how they react to me. I always though to myself that the A10 operate in such low altitudes up to 200ft and was very surprised that they go high to handle threads like SAM's.

Ok, but what to do when locked by a radar? I used to drop chaffs, but how accurate is this modeled in the simulation? Is that effective?
