xjiks Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 I would like to discuss about the Radio menu in the A10. Actually when you talk to the tower, you need to turn on the radio, set the frequency and activate the VHF/UHF radio to talk to the tower and then it brings you a communication menu where you hit "F5" to talk to the tower, and then have to choose in the list the airport you wish to communicate with. But, from what I think, (and when easy radio setting is not selected) at the time you selected the radio frequency and activated the correct radio type, it should bring you automatically to the "orders" menu ? Let me explain Actually it is like this: - I want to land Tbilisi airport - I choose radio frequency XXX MHz in the cokpit - Push the button to activate radio - Hit F5 for tower - Hit F1 (or another) to select Tbilisi - Hit F1 for "inbound" Why isn't it like this: - I want to land Tbilisi airport - I choose radio frequency XXX MHz in the cokpit - Push the button to activate radio - Hit F1 for "inbound" (I don't need to select the tower menu and airport menu because I already set the frequency for this particular airport, and use the radio to talk to towers) Does that makes sense ? :helpsmilie: L'important n'est pas de tuer, mais de survivre. Grimes Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 I think the reason is that there can be other assets on the same frequency and the game simply can't assume you are wanting to contact the tower. I suppose it could be possible to display communications relevant to whatever is on that channel, but that would clutter up the functionality abit I would think. The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world. Shez Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 Think of it as you are actually speaking on the radio and each time you select from the menu you are saying something in the mic. Select frequency. Key up the mic. F5 then slect tower F1 would be "Tbsili this is Hog1.." F1 for inbound would complete your message "is inbound". Kind of a pain. But more realistic. Maybe one day they will be able to actually capture your voice and you can't just talk like you would in real life. I also wish you didn't have to listen to yourself talk on the radio after you make all the menu selections. Making the selections should be your communication to whomever. _:Windows 10 64 Bit, I7 3770 3.4Ghz, 16 Gigs Ram, GTX 960, TM Warthog, Track IR 5 w/Pro Clip:_
Pyroflash Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 I think it is fine as it is now. As to presenting the orders menu immediately, I personally think it detracts from the realism. Such as there have been many a time when flying a plane IRL where I have set the right frequency on the wrong radio when trying to contact approach control. For example, I will have COM1 set to KHYX, and COM2 set to KLAN Approach Control. now, wanting to contact KLAN approach, I still had the radio set to COM1, KHYX. I tried about three times to contact KLAN approach on the wrong channel before realizing that I forgot to flip the radios. Such things can also happen in DCS: A10C, and I see no reason they shouldn't happen. If you aim for the sky, you will never hit the ground.
Mule Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 I agree i think the menus should shorten and cut out anything that couldn't possibly be on that particular frequency. It's a good point but i'm not complaining as it is pretty good anyway it would just be a bit better certainly not a show stopper. I have seen some ppl use voice activated commands to control the radio menus and seems to work well. I don't know what software they use but this is something you could look into if you are looking for that bit more realism. Fighter Pilot Podcast.

REL Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 That is one thing I wish for. F4 had that feature where you could turn off your own voice. -1 For the shortcut's radio menu - unrealistic in my opinion +1 For the own voice off/on feature - it could work good with the voice command softwares
Jona33 Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 FSX had a good ATC system. When you tuned the frequency the panel that you made selections with changed to the new Tower/ground etc panel with the options. It would be good if DCS had this and then you just pick inbound/request taxi etc with F1 F2 and the rest. Voice command is good. Make it more interesting. Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing
Dimebag1 Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 Wouldn't that be awesome tho, if Ed could integrate voice capture into the radios. We know voice recognition is possible, and if it only accepted spoken sentences in correct format, ie. The same as what was spoken over the radio currently, it would not be TOO difficult to achieve. A simple radio training mission would solve the need to speak in correct format. And yes, I hear you whoever is about to say, 'well actually that would be really difficult to implement, beyond ED's scope, etc etc', I didnt say it would be easy. I think it would first 'listen for 'who' you are trying to communicate with, then who YOU are, then your request/command, of which you would repeat a standard statement of which it can then compare against those which it has in it's database. From there it would issue a response. One can dream. :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
