Hi everyone,

This must have been discussed many times, but I am just beginning to explore the mission editor and I thought it is a pity :

- to restrict Ka-50 from taking off from a carrier in a mission knowing you can do that in free flight.

- forbidding to place small boats on lakes and rivers,

- not allowing amphibious vehicles to use this capabilitiy.

Any "tricks" you guys know to allow this? Or maybe in a 1.03 patch?

well i think there won't be a patch for naval operations in BS. you have to understand that BS wasn't made for naval operations and are not used on ships like the cobra(i'm sure the BS can operate off ships with the right upgrades) if the ships were able to do what they do in real life in BS. ED and his team would have had to do alot of research, work, and testing.the game itself would be taxing on today'c pc's.

Yes, if it is for the sake of realism, then I understand this was a deliberate choice from ED to prevent carrier takeoff. I don't want to start another flaming thread like the one about air to air weapons.

What about the other points? There are some huge lakes and numerous rivers in DCS map. If you have "off road" configured amphibious vehicles, they should be able to cross lakes and rivers. I would also love to see some commando actions with the small fast boats allowing to transport and disembark troops across lakes.

you want more flexibility?! i understand about the small ships or gun boats to go into rivers and lakes. there are amphibious vehicles in BS and maybe they should be able to cross rivers. for to get what you are asking for the game would have to leave from war sim to arcade and the dcs world would have to shrink big time. it's all about your pc's processing power.

Well, I made a multiplayer mission where you were on anti-ship duties. You take off of a FARP, but you rearm your Kh-25s and refuel from USN O.H.P. class destroyers, which are steaming towards the Russian battle groups. If you win the mission and never get shot down, you usually end up never seeing land the entire mission except for the very beginning. The American destroyers end up being closer to the enemy for almost the entire duration of the mission, so you spend all your over the water at altitudes of less than 10 meters (usually). You are usually not even close enough to land to see land. It's called "Sink the SAGs" if you are interested. But that's about the best we can do for naval ops.

Thanks for the replies guys. Speed, I love your idea. Can I try your mission? This would be a welcomed change for my squadron.

Suggested strategy: sink the Slava-class CG (the "Moskva") in the middle SAG by 1:08:00 into the mission if you want any hope at all of victory.

You also need to learn how to fire Kh-25s properly with the laser designator mode rather than the normal laser mode so that they will hit moving targets before you fly this mission.

Well, small boats should be able to swim in rivers. For my purpose I did tests long time ago... changed LUA and I put in ME Moscow on a river.

Don't know it worked on clients too, cause I didn't use it anymore.

But you can try for your needs.

Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D

Do you still have that mod or can you tell me what to change. I'm not very good and I don't know anything about lua. Could you post it here.

Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing

Going by the company website the KA-50 can land and fly from a ship, a frigate I think, but they aren't really meant for that.

I think the idea behind this, was simply to allow the KA-50 be able to supply/repair from a ship if really needed and then be able to head off to a land base to get stuff done properly.

I guess this idea comes from being able to fly to Alaska and then attack stuff then re-supply from ship and then attack more stuff.

The KA-50 I think has some pretty good navy ability really handles winds up to 5-7klm while landing on a ship on the stock model without any changes from the factory.

Errr, no... Attacking stuff in Alaska would be the job of Su-24's, Bears, Backfires, Blackjacks and so on. Makes zero sense to fly a helicopter like that, unless it is filling a role similar to the US Marine cobras/vipers for support of amphibious operations. (Something a variant of the Ka-52 is being tooled for.)

A lot more than handling goes into operating a helicopter at sea. Typically, large parts of the helicopter will have to be redesigned to cope with humidity, sea spray, salt etcetera etcetera.
