sotosev Posted June 25, 2011 Posted June 25, 2011 (edited) If I track an air to air target with TGP why can't I make it as SPI and see the target cue on the HUD? Is there any air to air video to see how other people engage air targets? Runibl Posted June 25, 2011 Posted June 25, 2011 Never tried it myself, but page 572-574 explains that it is possible. In TGP A-A mode, from the manual. When target is in crosshair area on the TGP, and you see the small cross over the target. Press "TMS Forward Short" to initiate Point Tracking of the target. Then you should be able to make it a SPI with TMS Forward Long, and should see the indicator on the HUD. This also enable to slew the AIM-9 indicator to the SPI using China Forward Long. Runi. Is there any air to air video to see how other people engage air targets? To prosecute targets via TGP: # Set the Depressible Pipper to 41 mils (3 degrees) # Locate and track target in Point Track mode (TMS FWD Short) # Set HUD as SOI (Coolie Hat Up) # Set AA mode (MMCB Long) # Slave AIM-9 seeker to TGP LOS (China Hat FWD Long) # Confirm tone and launch. Herewith excerpt from another post where I attempted an explanation of an engagement utilizing the TGP for situational awareness. If you want a track I'll see if I can post one later - let me know:I splashed the Toad with a sidewinder - I do not like to get close to a Toad as you are always going to lose that fight, especially with a virtual pilot that knows the Toad. Be that as it may, the track illustrates the principle well. I locate the Toad coming from my twelve (set depressible pipper to -41 degrees/TGP LOS, scan potential threat area) and initiate track once TGP spotted Toad (indicative of tracking cross). Once locked, I break left and descend to eliminate/decrease the chances of him spotting me first. Due to the closure rate I don't wait too long before turning back into the Toad, using the TGP SA cue to put my nose to target at his estimated Bearing and elevation, flanking him. As per the track, I let him spot me and we merge. After a turn or two I deliberatively break the engagement and extend to get distance for a sidewinder kill. At this stage I have lost visual SA and as such would have had to break the engagement, run and hope like hell in ordinary circumstances. I now however utilize the TGP again and engage, obtaining a firing solution by turning onto target with the TGP alone as I am blind. Visually acquire, Fox 2. Toad spoofs first, lock and Fox-2 again......Splash one.Above post just stresses the vital importance of utilizing the TGP SA cue in an aerial engagement. bluepilot76 Posted June 25, 2011 Posted June 25, 2011 Has anyone any good tips for acquiring the inbound threat with the TGP whilst the bogey is still beyond visual range. This is one thing I still use labels for.. It's called Radar :P Jk - In the Hog, if you have an approximate bearing/altitude on the Bandit, use the DP aligned with the TGP LOS and fly the airframe in such a manner that you are 'scanning' ahead in the general area you are expecting the bandit from, all the while watching the TGP/playing about with the Wide/Narrow FOV and Zoom Increase/Decrease, depending on estimated range - the Tracking cross will indicate that the TGP has picked up the bandit. That's the theory - in practice it takes a wee bit of juggling to get right. Novice or Veteran looking for an alternative MP career? Click me to commence your Journey of Pillage and Plunder! sotosev Posted June 25, 2011 Author Posted June 25, 2011 I really need to see a video to clear things out! My problem is that when I press China hat forward long the TGP takes me to the steering point. while I expect to see the airplane I track by the TGP! System specs below Case - Antec Three Hundred PSU - Corsair AX750watt Board - MSI Z170A GAMING PRO CPU - Intel i5 6600K 3900MHz Cooler - CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Plus Memory - Kingston HYPERX 16G DDR4 2400Mhz CL15 Graphics - MSI GEFORCE GTX 980 GAMING 4G SSD - Samsung 950 PRO 256GB M.2 NVMe Monitor - Philips 277E 27" 1920x1080 60Hz OS - Windows 10 Home 64bit Flight Controllers - Thrustmaster HOTAS WARTHOG, Saitek COMBAT RUDDER PEDALS, TrackIR 4, Track Clip Pro [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
159th_Viper Posted June 25, 2011 Posted June 25, 2011 My apologies - I might have left a step out, assuming you'd select the AIM-9. In any event, herewith track illustrating the principle: 1 - I set the pipper to 3 degrees. 2 - Select AA on TGP and set as SOI. 3 - Scan area where I am expecting bandit from. You'll see from the TGP that once I picked him up in the TGP FOV I kept him there by decreasing zoom to 3Z. 4 - Once the tracking cross appears, I place the bandit in Point-Track mode (TMS Fwd Short) and dive for the deck to ensure he does not pick me up and turn me into swiss cheese. 5 - In the dive, I set the HUD as SOI and select the AIM-9's from the DSMS. 6 - Utlizing the TGP for situational awareness I climb back up onto his six 7 - With HUD in AA mode, slave AIM-9 seeker to TGP LOS. You'll see that the seeker reticle is on the top of the HUD and is locked as indicated by the tone - Just follow the seeker up the HUD and fly until the bandit is in your FOV. 8 - Satisfy yourself that you're within range, launch and confirm kill. Track: If you for whatever reason miss with the AIM-9's or are too close for a sidewinder kill and you're in a hurry, ie got no time to fiddle with the IFFCC to set your Gun-Funnel properly, rely on your GBL (Gun Bore Line) Cross for a quick kill - Track: Hope this helps.
