Not sure what you mean about being restricted to group/own. As long as you only use 4 characters, you can put whatever you want in there...everything 1111 to ZZZZ and any combination in between.

In multiplayer with multiple flights, seeing a callsign instead of a Track Number is much easier to interpret.

Edit: I think you mean, "can I type in a callsign as the address for a SADL message?". The answer to that is no, you must type it in as "Flight Position-Group ID".

Yeah- that's more what I was talking about... So basically the advantage of having the callsign would be that instead of receiving the message from "01-03" or whatever your ID is... you'd be receiving it from "ENO." Though more often than not we're gabbing away on TS3 so we know who sent it because we'd say so.

More just curious about the feature and its application- that's all.

"ENO"

Type in anger and you will make the greatest post you will ever regret.

Interseting, I tried to put in 3 characters in the callsign the other night, took it, but the folks in my group were not able to see it, all they saw was my ID#?

The maximum character count is 4. It may be shorter.

Your callsign should appear to anyone who hooks your SADL track - Active or Passive. It used to work as advertised, so perhaps it was broken recently?

Well maybe I had different expectations? What I expected was that once I created my call sign, those in my group would see the characters instead of my ID# on the TAD. Perhaps they will only see it if they hook me???

Wingmen are presented on the TAD as Precise Position Location and Identification (PPLI) "tracks" through either the Situational Awareness Data Link (SADL) network, or the Link-16 network via a "gateway". (Link-16 is not presently simulated in DCS, to the best of my knowledge.)

For wingmen, the PPLI track symbol contains the flight position number, eg. "1", "2", "3", etc. The voice callsign - as entered in the NET settings page - appears only in the left side of the data block that appears when the track symbol is actively or passively hooked with the TAD cursor.
