Brutal Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 Hey guys, I just received TrackIR 5 with the pro clip and I have been messing around with the settings for a couple of days and have found that I like it at about 2.0 speed and about 20 smooth. What are your settings and are there any little things I should know about so I can tweak mid game or to make it even better. I can't believe I flew in sims this Long without it. it's especially good when keeping eyes on a ground target or turning onto finals.
Nixon Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 Ive got mine set to 1.0 speed and 100 smooth and it works for me. One thing i wish I could tweek would be the zoom I get from looking to the left? My reciever is attached to the right side of my headset so when I turn my head it sees the reciever getting closer or further away. i had it pretty good for FSX but for some reason it never got that good for DCS A10.
Brutal Posted August 8, 2011 Author Posted August 8, 2011 I just put mine on speed 1.0 and Smooth on 50, and that works pretty sweet too. You've got smooth on 100 Nixon? Mine only goes up to 51 though. How did you get yours to go that high? I am running TrackIR 5 though, is that what you have?
FreeFall Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 (edited) Default settings, almost. Just assigned Pause and Center keys to my mouse, instead of default function keys. TrackIR5 is un****inbeliavable stable and accurate. Couldn't believe it would be that good. But it is. Edited August 8, 2011 by FreeFall

bonemarrow Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 A little something I just discovered is that you can adjust the degree of precision enabled by your precision button. In the 'camera' tab, there's a list of attributes. The bottom one is Precision and it defaults to 100.0. Increasing this value will cause a more precise movement. I tried all the way up to 700.0 (which was vastly slow) and have since settled on 250.0. Major improvement in my opinion.

bonemarrow Posted August 11, 2011 Posted August 11, 2011 6 DOF is an Art Form. There's no doubt, Trackir is a powerful tool for us simmers these days. It offers the kind of realism we only dreamt about fifteen years ago, providing fidelity and immersion... not to mention enhancing the simmer's overall SA picture tenfold. But I find doing 6 DOF, properly, while not really difficult, or hard to set up, or confusing in any way, to be something that I need to work at... especially with DCS: A-10c Warthog. From the first few times I got in the A-10c, I realized that there is a whole lot more than just turning your head this way and that, or leaning in close to peer at the guages. There are centerings needed often, Trackir momentary pauses needed, zoom re-sets, sensitivity adjustments in the Trackir GUI, head pre-positionings to get to other views more easily etc... For instance, I found that when it was time to look at the TACAN or ILS panels, it was often a real pain in the ass chore... where getting to a comfortable view way, way back there seemed to have me contorting in my chair like a double jointed circus performer. Also, often times - I guess from having reached the conical limits of the Trackir device - the view will shake and shimmy way out of control, and even stop moving around at all, forcing me to start all over again. So I started to develope routines. A nice little trick I use, amoung others, calls for looking up 20 or 30 degrees, then centering BEFORE trying to make a TACAN panal look; for now my head is at a higher canter looking straight ahead; this affords me many more degrees of downward looking movement to work with. My God, how much nicer and more stable it is when I do that simple routine first. Another one is squaring up center, then shifting over all the way right or left before looking down at either side panel - a great technique for working with the CDU. I also realized soon enough that to get to a certain viewpoint, cutting the Trackir input for a moment after getting the view in the general vicinity, then switching to Mouse look/zoom refined the whole process in some instances. Now I'm trying to practice these kinds of things so that they're ingrained in my muscle memory, and I find that as I gain experience with this sim, I'm starting to develop a choreography of movements so that the cockpit experience is a more seamless, more efficient, and faster endeavor. As I see it, it's another skill set we should (must?) learn... in addition to all those stick and rudder and avionics and weaponry and battlefield SA skills we need to succeed. But I think, more than that, it really is grace in motion. It's a Flight Simmer's Art! You can see it in some of the better tutorial videos... how smartly the guy moves around the cockpit and shifts views. Sometimes, I wonder if it's just me, or if you guys out there find managing the cockpit in 6 DOF something which requires your attention more often than not. Perhaps it's just me who has difficulties.... wouldn't be the first time.
Sarge55 Posted August 11, 2011 Posted August 11, 2011 I had the same contortion action going on for the TACAN and radios etc but what I did was start useing snap views for those. I assigned a switch for each snap view and when I want to set the dials etc it's a quick snap of the switch and I'm good to go. AP set of course.... Yskonyn Posted August 11, 2011 Posted August 11, 2011 I run mine at speed 1.0, smoothness 40 Adjusted the Pitch, Roll and Yaw axis to the Deadzone curve. Adjusted the X,Y and Z axis to the Smooth curve. Reset the Smoothness in Precision mode to 200. Fairly stable now, but still tweaking from time to time. Remapped the function keys to ALT-F12, ALT-F9 and ALT-F7 and mapped those in turn to the lower G-keys of my G15 keyboard for easy one-button access. When you say 'switch', are you refering to a modifier type switch, or a particular switch/button on your hotas? Also, are you saying that there is a particular snap view which zeros in on the tacan/ils panels (or any/all other side panels)? Using the Trackir, I simply haven't explored the snap views. I always thought they were just for forward/side/over-the-shoulder/front-left/right etc... or are you yourself setting up a particular view and then saving it somehow? Sarge55 Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 I've assigned three switches on my HOTAS throttle for the three snap views I use; Re-assigned the EAC switch to see the Radios - snap view 1 "" "" the RDR ALTM switch to see the CDU - snap view 2 " " the APU Start switch to see the ILS/TACAN - snap view 3 These are located under - Options/controls/View Cockpit. I found that these three switches on the HOTAS are only used during start up any way so I just click them in the cockpit. They are two position switches so as long as they are on the snap view is up. Sometimes I need the APU in flight but still pretty rarely. These are standard views not specially tweaked or created. bonemarrow Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 Good info, Sarge. I'm gonna have a look at these snap views tonight. Thanks.
