Hi everybody,

this morning I saw the new catalyst 5.8 driver package on ati.com. I transferred it on my disc but have not yet installed it.

Has anybody tested this and did anything special occur (fps change, minor or major glitches etc.). I will make some tests in the next hours with 5.7 and 5.8 and report later on.

Greetings

Eltra

PS: This is my first post. I´m glad and happy to be with you guys..

... OK, all test done. Nothing weird to report, all seems to be fine...

Regarding to what the devs at ati say and what might be expected there are no exceptional enhancements in the new driver version for games like FC.

One thing worth mentioning: i had some ugly texture aliasing on the hills when i was on ground while taxiing (nothing that could be fixed with FSAA or IAF). Those seem to have vanished in 5.8.

FPS are stable (30 to 60) airborne and drop down to below 20 (15) on ground.

Testing facts: 1600*1200, all medium, haze advanced, shadows all planar, 32bit, Athlon 64 3800, x850xtpe, 2Gig RAM

Thats it for now...

been using the 5.8's since they were released last wednesday, seem just the same as the 5.7's to me on this x800xt, nothing new, just bug fixes i reckon.....oh and those flickering lines you speak of eltra are a known shader bug with the lockon engine, all video cards using adv.haze get it

Hi Eltra glad you could join us.

The 5.8 Catalyst is a great driver. Definitely an improvement over 5.7 drivers.

Those flickering lines/shadows you mentioned are definitely fixed and I also got a nice performance gain.

The flickering would only appear when I have Haze set to advanced....

(edited... current 5.7

waiting for my WD Raptor to come in before I redo the machine)

Thanks,

I guess I'll be trying them out soon, don't have the time now because of work. Hopefully they work good for me.

...after having tested for a longer time I am shure that 5.8 is worth every byte. I do have about 10% more fps when I run with 4xFSAA and 8AIF and the scenery is not that crowded. If it is and there is a lot of AI to be computed, it seems to be the cpu that limits the rest of my rig. So especially for online play the driver is a good improvement.
