Hello again,

I was playing shortly and managed to keep my airspeed at 189- 192 KIAs, altitude at 12550 , but he turned left and I chased into the boom to wreck my right wing and plummet down dead...

Any ideas on tanker pre-contact speed? I know 1nm is the range, but how do I know the range without having him on my TAD or as a TGP object in A-A???:mad::mad:

I was playing campaign and for the 20th time, I ended my career with mistakes I promised myself not to commit..

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

I pull up in formation and trim correctly once i've matched his speed. Sometimes it's 185, sometimes it's faster, sometimes it's slower. I don't think theres a way to know for sure or ask the tanker.

The TACAN is very useful in tracking the tanker before its in visual range. Make sure you set the right frequency and select TCN on the navigation panel in front of the stick. On the HSI "Pointer 1" should point you towards the tanker and also give you range.

Overrunning the tanker was a big problem with me when I started learning, and I found that at max zoom and the tanker's wings are halfway to the edge of my HUD, I can use my eyeballs to determine closing speed fairly well. If I see that I'm closing too fast, I'll throttle to idle and extend the speed brakes. As I slow, I'll keep watching the tanker and when I think the speeds are matched, I'll glance at my IAS then close to 5-10+ that.

Once I get close, I'll reduce my closing speed to 1-3+, they say that you approach the boom at a walking pace.

Probably nothing close to reality but it can work.

The tanker turning is its own demon in itself. IIRC F4AF would warn you that a turn was approaching, would be awesome if this sim would do the same. The tanker will snap to a 10 degree bank angle and if you're not ready for it you'll shoot off to the right. My technique is to bank over more to catch up with him then level the wings slightly to allow him to catch up. I'll do this 2 or 3 times until our "banks" are the same. Also you'll lose a tiny bit of airspeed in a bank so I'll add a nudge of power to keep my airspeed up.

BTW, I'm new!

I though you're supposed to remain static and the boom operator will guide the boom in..

Yes but u have to get to the sweet spot. He has to 'plunge' the telescopic pipe into the nose of the jet at an angle of about 45 ideally (though he will chase you a little). So you have to make it as easy for him as possible, by staying as steady as possible when you get to the sweet spot. He's constrained by the shortest and longest length of the boom, so best position is in the 'centre' of his window.

STOP THINKING ABOUT THE NUMBERS!! The job is to match the speed. In fact dim the HUD completely, its only distracting.

You can discuss all day this topic, but like riding a bike, the only way you learn is to practice lots. For me i practised 'formation' flying with a wingman as lead, then hooking to the tanker became a much easier task to learn. Also start with a clean A10, then when you crack it, add ordinance.

I'm sure you have a mission with you at same alt as texaco, and just outside precontact point? make sure you have an accurate stick and throttle, and dumb down the stick responses to start with.

I followed the standby HUD advice. Another career down the stink...

Have a look. I actually start refuelling at the last leg of the mission...

Just FYI the sweet spot is 32.5 degrees. The boom only moves between 25-40 degrees.

For some getting this correct is one of the problems because if you reach either of the boom operating limits then he will disconnect. Most ppl I've seen sit too high behind the Tanker (i.e. hit upper lmit).

Ok, I will need this quick guys.. Is there a net ID for the tanker? I'd love to be able to have him on the TAD, both his altitude and location (bearing) should be there. Please advise? I'm walking hot into the campaign and getting further from Batumi (now TGT is like 80 + mikes out), and I could use the tanker practice...

No, they are not datalink equipped. They do however have a TACAN unit.
