Paco Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 Guys, This may be the wrong place to post, but my gaming computer just died and I suspect it's a CPU cooler problem. I suspect my Coolit Liquid CPU cooler was having water pump issues. Now my computer won't even boot up. Question is....if the CPU cooler died will it prevent my computer from booting up or did I fry my CPU and that's what preventing a boot up? I suspect it will be a few weeks until I'm up gaming again. Any help or advice will be appreciated. /r, Paco
cichlidfan Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 (edited) Your cooler has nothing to do with the function of the components other than keeping them cool enough to function. However, if the cooler pump stopped for a significant amount of time the temp of your CPU probably went through the roof and cooked. If you have the tools you can start by testing the PSU to see if that is the actual problem but if the machine is dead silent the choices are PSU, MOBO or CPU, in my experience. Bolt-1 Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 Was the liquid only cooling the CPU or also for the GPU in tandem. If just the CPU my educated guess would be you cooked the Processor. And if you did that could also mean you may have damaged parts of the motherboard also. Most likely the socket. Hopefully you also had some good air flowing through the case. Depth Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 if the CPU cooler died will it prevent my computer from booting up or did I fry my CPU and that's what preventing a boot up? If it doesn't boot at all it's likely to be the CPU or motherboard. Even with no cooler installed you should be able to atleast get into the BIOS as all processors and motherboards used today have failsafes that automatically clock down the processor when the temperature gets too high. So it's near impossible to "burn it out". This is a trial and error process, do you have any hardware available for swapping? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
EtherealN Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 What Depth said, but with a minor addition: some overclocking techniques include the disabling of the throttlers... I've never liked those techniques, but they are sometimes good for the really extreme OC's. For me, the risk just wasn't ever worth it, though. The intergrated water pump/cooling block closed loop type liquid coolers aren't very good due to the radiator size. They have a piss poor surface area and they're not to be mistaken for custom water cooling. You can get much better air coolers like the Noctua NH D14 that'll eat any closed loop liquid coolers.. I had a Corsair H-50 and much prefer my Noctua. Edited October 17, 2011 by Vault [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Depth Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 some overclocking techniques include the disabling of the throttlers Why would anyone do this terrible thing? CPU's with throttling (old Intel) vs. CPU's without throttling (old AMD) at stock clock speeds [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
EtherealN Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 Why would anyone do this terrible thing? To allow exact control of voltages. When you throttle, you have to also control the voltages. But well, I'm with you on that. The only reason to do it is if you are in an OC competition. Shouldn't be done on a production machine.
