Anyone noticed the T80's using what appear to be either a Strella or 9m11, type of SAM? Not sure what they have or where they are firing it from. looks like its from the main gun??

I have a column of T80's in my "Finest Hour" and "Dangerous Escalation" missions, that are equipped with a large supply of SAMs? I wondered why they were so darned difficult to attack!;)

Anyone know what these missiles are?

Will try for a screenshot, but they are damn fast!

They will fire their main gun at you if they can get a good solution. I don't know of any subcalibre missiles that can be fired from the T80 gun. The BMP-3 can fire ATGMs from its main gun, but i don't think that those work against fast movers.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

They are very good in shooting at you. If missile is coming to you , chances of escaping are small.

Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D

Against a fast mover?

I can see where they are useful against whirlybirds, but a fast mover would hardly ever fly into the sphere segment that the gun can reach (elevation wise) where in reach of such a missile.

The Apaches in the campaign missions, with the addition of these missiles, are

toast.

They didn't usually fare too well if they hit the line earlier that SEAD &/or CAS flights,

but now they just fall like flies to those missiles...

Thanks Eddie. Yes thats the missile.

It takes out the AI Apaches and Cobras with ease! From a mission design point of view the T80's are a balance of power changer:)

These need to be treated to a dose of SEAD now!

Cheers.:D

Yeah, considering that the Refleks/ Svir system has an operational range of between 4-6 km maximum, and flies at an average of approximately 600 knots, while the Hellfire has a range of 8 km and flies at approximately 900 knots, I think the Apache should really have a completely impervious standoff attack.

Not to mention the most US helicopters (and I would presume those of other western nations as well), to include Apache, are equipped with IR dazzlers that would prove modestly effective in disrupting the guidance (less than they could be, since the Refleks/Svir seeker window faces BACKWARD, toward the launcher, rather than targets, but still)

Also, I don't believe the pop-up attack profile used by western attack helicopters is modelled properly. Additionally, as trees are still not collidable, the pop-up attack profile wouldn't work in many cases anyhow; the helicopter would drop below the treeline, and the fire seeking on it would just fly right through the trees and hit it anyway.

Long story short, the Soviet-designed tube-launched ATGMs should be a pretty minor threat to properly employed Apaches. They are currently simulated incorrectly. (the Apaches, that is... the ATGMs may be modelled correctly, but the Apaches use stupid, STUPID tactics. I used to see them get shot down by 125mm APFSDS all the time... and unless they fly within 3km of a tank, that should NEVER happen.)
