Pyroflash Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 GTX 6xx question. If I decide to put one of Nvidia's new cards (when they get released, they are probably PCI-e 3.0) inside my current system (PCI-e 2.1 slots), does anyone think there will be any conceivable issues with this? If you aim for the sky, you will never hit the ground.
KLR Rico Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 PCIe 2.0 was backwards compatible with 1.0, so I would *assume* it'll be compatable... but who knows... i5-4670K@4.5GHz / 16 GB RAM / SSD / GTX1080 Rift CV1 / G-seat / modded FFB HOTAS
Kuky Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 there won't be any issues with this, they tested HD7970 which is PCI-E 3.0 also and it works just fine in PCI-E 2.0 slot... also tests showed negligble performance decrease, so you'll be just fine PC specs: Windows 11 Home | Asus TUF Gaming B850-Plus WiFi | AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D + LC 360 AIO | MSI RTX 5090 LC 360 AIO | 55" Samsung Odyssey Gen 2 | 64GB PC5-48000 DDR5 | 1TB M2 SSD for OS | 2TB M2 SSD for DCS | NZXT C1000 Gold ATX 3.1 1000W | TM Cougar Throttle, Floor Mounted MongoosT-50 Grip on TM Cougar board, MFG Crosswind, Track IR
Pyroflash Posted January 13, 2012 Author Posted January 13, 2012 (edited) Okay, my main concern was the reduction is bandwidth when going backwards from 3.0 to 2.1. However if this is a negligible issue as you say, then I guess I will go with it. Edited January 13, 2012 by Pyroflash If you aim for the sky, you will never hit the ground.
Kuky Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 See this: http://www.overclock.net/t/1188376/hardwarecanucks-hd-7970-pci-e-3-0-vs-pci-e-2-0-comparison 1 PC specs: Windows 11 Home | Asus TUF Gaming B850-Plus WiFi | AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D + LC 360 AIO | MSI RTX 5090 LC 360 AIO | 55" Samsung Odyssey Gen 2 | 64GB PC5-48000 DDR5 | 1TB M2 SSD for OS | 2TB M2 SSD for DCS | NZXT C1000 Gold ATX 3.1 1000W | TM Cougar Throttle, Floor Mounted MongoosT-50 Grip on TM Cougar board, MFG Crosswind, Track IR
Pyroflash Posted January 15, 2012 Author Posted January 15, 2012 Thanks for the article, it helped to greatly ease my fears about being forced into dropping a good $1700 into what would essentially be an entirely new computer; just to upgrade my graphics card. Pilotasso Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 PCI-E 3.0 is yet to meet a card that challenges its bandwith. it might be a different story with Quad SLI (but then you have to get a MOBO capable of 16X for all 4 cards for 3.0 have a raison d´etre). .
