ShuRugal Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 So, this arms depot is kicking my ass. The problem i have is that the wingman AI refuses to acknowledge any targets, even after calling them out over radio or datalinking them during recon. Since i don't have enough Vikhrs to take care of all the serious threats, i can't complete the mission without getting close enough for rockets/cannon, which means getting my ass blown up. I did manage to get the datalink target designation down, but when i order my wingman to engage designated targets, he fires one vikhr, closes to 1km, and gets reduced to shredded scrap. halp! how do i make my wingman -not- commit suicide so i can complete the mission???
Shein Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 What are you calling a "serious" threat? a lot of things I used to consider serious that I would waste a vikhr on can be safely engaged with the cannon... That 2A42 monster is actually the autocannon they have installed on the BMP! Effective range is about 2.2-2.3 miles depending on slant. And thats with automatic, if you fire it manually you can squeeze a little more range out of it too. As for "serious" threats, ZU-23's, MTLBs, and even manpads can be dealt with with the cannon from a safe distance. Even if the manpad manages to get a shot off, at that range (and you see him shoot) you have ample time to take cover and pop flares. Remember, MANPADs are defense weapons by nature and are relatively short ranged. All that being said, save your vikhrs for the serious stuff, like SA series sams, T-72s, etc. Then you won't need to rely on your wingman! Its no secret he's been kinda flakey since day one... Hope this helps!
EbonySeraphim Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 If you're talking BS1, the wingman AI is pretty terrible. I remember it has a very low chance of acknowledging an attack order, so I had to pretty much always use one of two strategies - datalink, or give your wingman a general "cover me" order. I haven't tried this, but you could also try telling them to do recon in an area first, then tell them to engage available targets by type. That way you force them to discover and attack. I fly BS2 now and the wingman AI is much much better. ShuRugal Posted January 23, 2012 Author Posted January 23, 2012 well, the assigned targets for the mission are vehicles parked in a motor pool. 6 T-72s, 6 BMPs, 4 mobile artillery, and a slew of jeeps. Surrounding the depot are 4 SA-series SAMs (which are supposed to get wiped by the fast movers, but the fast movers dont always get 'em all, usually 2 survive) and another 4 BMPs. Have to use vikhrs on the 72s, nothing else kills them unless i get stupid lucky with a SKOM, 2 more for the SAMs, 4 for the outlying BMPs, by which time the 6 BMPs in the depot are laying out a continuous stream of missiles (which seem to not be very well guided, fortunately) and throw up a wall of lead if i get inside cannon range. At this point, i designate the BMPs and order wingman to engage linked targets, and he flies right into their cannon fire. why doesn't the AI in BS1 properly assess threats and engage from outside of return-fire range?
Suchacz Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 I think, that problem is in low visibility, maybe he is not able to lock the target with his shkval... Per aspera ad astra! ShuRugal Posted January 24, 2012 Author Posted January 24, 2012 yes, i've realized that problem as well. But how can i get him to lock a target then? I mean, even being unable to get shkval lock, i can still manually position the sensor and get missiles on target, why can't the AI do this?
Irregular programming Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 If this is the mission I think it is equip illumination rockets and use them before attacking.
dsobbe Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 yes, i've realized that problem as well. But how can i get him to lock a target then? In BS1, try locking a target yourself and then telling your wingman to, "Engage my target". Once he acknowledges, you can unlock that target and look for others. Watch your wingman. If he starts to fly too close to the target, tell him to "Rejoin". He will break off and rejoin. When he's out of danger, repeat the above. It's slow, but it keeps your wingman alive longer and makes him more useful. With very dangerous targets, I assign it to my wingman, as above, and then fly a simutaneous offset attack. That seems to confuse the target and cause a delay in firing at us. Most times one of use gets a kill and we both live. It works for me, most of time.
Roadsweeper Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 Is that the one with the ammo depot in it too? I blew up the ammo depot, took out the outer edge sams and the missile spamming BMPs then had to return to base to reload and refuel, since yeah the AI wingman was useless, and when I got back the light from the still burning ammo dump was sufficient to manually target the vikhrs if the SHKVAL wont lock, or mop up with cannon fire. The T-72s seemed to be inactive in the dark too. Very few of the missions actually have a set time you must do them in, so possible to return to base for more ammo, espeacilly when the wingamn gets himself shot down or flies into a hill.
