goon3r Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 Ive seen several posts where folks are advising against using usb monitors for mfd export. Yet still, I see many people with dual usb monitors with mfds that seem to be quite happy with them. Im looking to run eyefinity 3 +1 and Im struggling to find a widescreen monitor small enough to fit on my desk with dvi/vga.I dont have any real mounting options and need something that wont block my center screen. So, Ive been looking at getting this 15" usb:http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005SEZR0G/ref=asc_df_B005SEZR0G1947795?smid=A2NG4HB43UEDVL&tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395105&creativeASIN=B005SEZR0G&hvpos=none&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=98135413213985665&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt= This would easily fit on my desk but Im just concerned since its usb. what kind of performance can I expect with 6048x1080 +1 usb ? I have a 7950. Also, out of curiosity what monitors size monitors are u guys running 3 +1 using ?
Mogadon Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 I have one on order, I'll let you know if / how it works out. I'm not an expert but I don't think your video card will be affected by this additional monitor. With the extra monitor being USB I presume it will have it's own internal USB video card and is unrelated to your regular video card which is running the triple monitors. I suppose that doesn't mean it won't necessarily affect in-sim performance but I don't think that performance hit is related in anyway to your present video card, ie. you could upgrade the wazoo out of your video card but still see an awful performance hit from something like this due to other circumstances. It's just pedantics I guess.
Mule Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 I use a small USB touchscreen to export mfd's etc I have had no problems with it. Fighter Pilot Podcast.
Slayer Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 My understanding is that your video card still does the processing but the output is somehow compressed by your CPU then just passed through the various system busses out the USB port. It uses display link so it should work ok as long as you are only using it to display MFCDs or CDU etc. If you are thinking of using it for additional viewing area of 3d content I would recommend against that. I have 2 MIMO 7" USB screens that worked fine. They should work just fine with your setup but we havent seen your system specs yet so I'm just guessing. I never noticed an appreciable framerate drop overall. Maybe 1 or 2 FPS [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] System Specs Intel I7-3930K, Asrock EXTREME9, EVGA TITAN, Mushkin Chronos SSD, 16GB G.SKILL Ripjaws Z series 2133, TM Warthog and MFD's, Saitek Proflight Combat pedals, TrackIR 5 + TrackClip PRO, Windows 7 x64, 3-Asus VS2248H-P monitors, Thermaltake Level 10 GT, Obutto cockpit
goon3r Posted March 25, 2012 Author Posted March 25, 2012 Thanks for the feedback guys. I think I'll give the AOC-USB monitor a try. It should be here in the next day or so. Much of my initial concerns about the USB monitors came from PeterP's post from here:http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1413270&postcount=9 And when you think about to add small monitors for MFCDs and so on - please stay away from usb monitors - they add a extra workload to your system as they install virtual-graphicadapter and have to get the rendered image out of the V-Ram of your primary GPU. And than copied through the system-ram again. - This can be bottlenecking you whole Rendering. - these USB solutions are more than sufficient for desktop purposes - but not for gaming! So look out for cheap vga solutions to be used with a adapter - directly at the graphic-card. I'd really love to get a vga monitor since my card can certainly handle the processing directly but it seems that I'll be looking at craigslist or ebay for one of those if the USB monitor option doesn't work out.
goon3r Posted April 2, 2012 Author Posted April 2, 2012 So I got the AOC USB monitor a few days ago. I'm pretty happy so far. The size was almost perfect for my desk. It sits right below my center monitor. Even with Eyefinity the FPS is still 25-30ish with Max GFX settings in-game. Can't complain too much at all. I'll try to post a picture of it.
