So all you need is a motherboard, CPU and RAM? What's your budget?

Cool. I read the red, and was wondering whether that is all you need and also what your budget was so I can spec you better parts, as the parts you said you were going for aren't entirely good choices.

Sorry Jasky already bought. Paid about £220 for the bundle (£200 was my budget but sold my wife for the evening so was able to make up the difference)

I know its not cutting edge but it will do, won't it?

p.s Joshing about the wife... it was all day :music_whistling:

Bearing in mind in 1997 I paid £120 for 8meg of ram!!!

What is your intended application for this system? Anything in particular besides games?

Reason I ask is because Bulldozer is an acceptable server chip. For anything else I consider it a case of massive "meh". It has a weak floating point capacity and integer capacity is highly fractioned - very nice for multithreaded integer workloads like basic server applications, not so good for single/few-thread integer workloads, terrible for single/few-thread floating point workloads.

Well, all is not lost, apparently they have a bunch of OS optimizations in the pipeline that will make it work better. From what I heard they needed windows to do some special thread handling to get proper performance out of it, so it is possible that software will fix it.

EDIT: http://techreport.com/articles.x/21813/1

There's an old review. Most of the game benchmarks are of questionable use for anticipating DCS performance of course, but if I remember the 6k+ you'll still see a boost in performance. :)

Oh hell yeah, no worries about that. :)

(EDIT: I'm just a perfectionist when it comes to these things so I tend to sort of "write off" anything that isn't just right in the performance/cost department. :) The Bulldozer architecture is plain weird though and definitely did not perform to expectations, but they're claiming thread handling issues there and it might be true given the weirdness of the design, OS updates might fix that.)

Also, what CPU cooler are you using? Vengeance is about as high profile as RAM comes so you may run into some issues installing it.

It's about a 3% performance gain on Windows 7 with the hotfixes. MS is working on more stuff for Windows 8 that should trickle down to 7 also. Not sure if they are doing anything for XP or Vista. Hopefully you have Windows 7.

Sidenote: These fixes also seem to increase performance on Intel chips too.
