Guest IguanaKing Posted October 2, 2005 Posted October 2, 2005 Here are a few photos I took while I was working at the AFA today. I was there certifying the ATCRBS/TIS transponders in 7 of their DA-20's. I've got a few more I'm trying to upload, but imageshack is having a senior moment apparently.
dogtoes Posted October 2, 2005 Posted October 2, 2005 Nice pics! I must admit that I'm jealous that you get to be around aircraft like that. Then again, I get to be around MH-60's all week so that's cool too. Where exactly is your work located at? And how long have the Air Force been using those airframes for training? Dice Posted October 2, 2005 Posted October 2, 2005 Here's the story behine 205.... http://www.warthogpen.com/walloffame.html Ugly but well hung!
Guest IguanaKing Posted October 2, 2005 Posted October 2, 2005 MH-60s? Dogtoes, are you assigned to an AFSOC squadron? I am actually based in Denver, which is about 60 miles north of the AFA, but I travel there fairly regularly to keep the DA-20 fleet up to snuff avionics-wise. I'm a bit jealous that you are around MH-60s, actually. I was in the Combat Control/Pararescue I-course in the very early 90's, but I got rolled back to civilian life after I completely dislocated my left knee in about the 3rd week. I'm also a contractor for ATG (Aviation Technology Group), so I get to work on the new Javelin and their Aerovodochody L-39 chase plane. The Javelin, BTW, made its first flight on Friday, September 30th. :D Thanks for the link, Dice. Here are some more pics of 77-0205, along with a pic of the T-38.
dogtoes Posted October 2, 2005 Posted October 2, 2005 MH-60s? Dogtoes, are you assigned to an AFSOC squadron? AFSOC? Nope. Army Spec Ops. (MH-60L's and MH-60K's) I was a civilian contractor for years but my current job is as a Field Service Rep for a certain major Helicopter producing company that shall remain nameless! ;) It's a great job where I get to be around some real Buck Rogers stuff! Good times. Cheers, Chris Alienware P4 3.0 GHz 800 MHz FSB | WinXP Pro SP2 | 2 GB PC3200 | ATI X850 256 MB with XT PE BIOS | Saitek X52 | TrackIR 3 Pro with Vector Expansion | Voice Buddy v3.0

Dice Posted October 2, 2005 Posted October 2, 2005 I believe that is located at Barksdale ANG base LA. I can't see the tail number (on the nose) very well what do you guys think it is...618? Ugly but well hung!

Dice Posted October 2, 2005 Posted October 2, 2005 76-519 FT Leonardwood MO, (Museum) placed there in 1993. Ugly but well hung!
Guest IguanaKing Posted October 2, 2005 Posted October 2, 2005 How about a few hints? What country was that?
hitman Posted October 2, 2005 Posted October 2, 2005 Ive never been O/S, thought the tail number would give it away. Dice is indeed correct, I snapped this pic while I was stationed in Ft. Leonardwood in Missouri, took it in Nov. 2000. I wish they would do some touch up to that aircraft, last time I saw it the tires were dry rotted, birds made a nest in the GAU and in the wheel wells. They took the laser pod off and didnt even put a dummy up. Guest IguanaKing Posted October 2, 2005 Posted October 2, 2005 DOH!!! I apparently posted my request for a hint right after Dice had already answered. You were pretty lucky that you never went overseas, almost every Marine has been to Okinawa at least once. Not that its a bad place, its just that its climate takes some getting used to. 77-0205 didn't have its Pave Penny mounted either.
hitman Posted October 2, 2005 Posted October 2, 2005 I never wanted to go to oki. 3 things a marine becomes out there were a health nut, an alcoholic with a lot of bruises, and a religious nut. Guest IguanaKing Posted October 2, 2005 Posted October 2, 2005 Well, I'll have to tell my brother about that. ;) LOL. He was known as one of the old men of Okinawa at Camp Schwab. He spent his entire active duty term there. One of his buddies beat his record though...poor guy was just a month behind my brother for his Separation date, and got stuck there when Stop-Loss was invoked. It sounds like you missed out on a good time...Habu snakes, eating goat brains at JWTC, etc. :D
Dice Posted October 2, 2005 Posted October 2, 2005 ANy idea where this one is located at? I took this one while I was stationed in the Marines, and ill pay for the beer if anyone knows where this one is. So I guess I win the beer?? ;) Ugly but well hung!
Guest IguanaKing Posted October 2, 2005 Posted October 2, 2005 Yeah, Hitman, can you e-mail it to Dice? Hey...I know...since I'm only about 60 miles from you, I'll just drive down there and accept the reward on his behalf. :D Just kidding, Dice
STAR_80 Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 Ok, So lets get this right. 1 A-10 uses 370 rounds of 30mm depleted uranium rounds to bring down a utilty helo. And we turn it into a monument? Wow. But in defence of the Hog in question, the high gloss Euro that they sprayed it, is hideous it deserves more than that.
hitman Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 lol accept the beer...what you prefer? guiness or budweiser? thems the only 2 beers ill ever buy anyone. Star why you gotta kill the moment??? Guest IguanaKing Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 Well, Star, 77-0205 WAS sent to AMARC (which is many times a death sentence) so its good too see that its being cared for and not rotting outside of Tucson. Besides, regardless of the mission of the helicopter, or the number of rounds of API expended, it is still the first A2A kill by the Hawg. BTW...the gloss paint is MUCH easier to keep clean, especially against those who don't need engines to fly and are quite fond of showing their disgust with aircraft by pooping on them. ;) Hitman, Guiness is definitely the weapon of choice. Hell, if you come up to the Denver Old Chic (Four score and an old chic ago... ;) ) on South Colorado Boulevard on Tuesday night, I'll buy YOU a beer or two. :icon_jook
STAR_80 Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 Well, thats what I thought. The flat paint would weather rather rapidly. I think the A-10 is one of the best aircraft there ever was, but really even the OV-10 Bronco (which is also an aircraft that I hold close to my heart) that was mentioned as an observer craft in the engagement, could have made short work of the helo. Hell I guess I agree with ya Iguana, what ever excuse they use to save a Hog from the bone yard is fine by me. Hey Hitman, Are you stationed at Ft Carson? I did 7 years there. Will be visiting again later this month. **Doh, I just caught that this was at the Academy. Did they take the B-52 down?** Guess I'll get to see the famous "Popper" sooner than I ever thought I would LOL!! :D
Guest IguanaKing Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 Nope, the Buff is still right there, at the North entrance. I usually work on the South end of the Academy, that's where the airfield is. :D
STAR_80 Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 So is the 10 near the 52 or at the south entrance?
STAR_80 Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 Hey IguanaKing, Do you by any chance know if the Air Museum in Denver is still open? They have a Hustler there, or they did at least. Thought I would take my son there.
Guest IguanaKing Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 Its just North of the road that goes to the airfield, just West of the airfield itself, so its actually a fair distance away from the Buff. IIRC, from yesterday, the area is called "Thunderbird Airmanship Overlook", there is also a T-38 with the Thunderbirds livery on it.
