pcalvert Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 This might be a daft question.. but when you first start a mission - how do you know which airfield you are at (apart from looking at the map). I would like to start the aircraft properly - including contacting the tower, ground crew etc and set the radios accordingly. Is there any simple of knowing where you are when you first enter the mission? Depth Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 how do you know which airfield you are at (apart from looking at the map). Is there any simple of knowing where you are when you first enter the mission? Well assuming real life pilots know where they are when they get briefed, they also have maps and logbooks, lists over airfields with frequencies and field info, etc. I feel like using the F10 map (with no enemy showing of course) is like looking it up in the book. Your option would be to print a list of airfields in the region and observe the briefing for your location. That being said, I do believe the topmost option in the ATC radio submenu is always the closest airfield and thus your starting point. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
jiblet Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 In my experience the closest airfield is the one at the top of your ATC radio list. However that probably doesn't happen if you fly without simplified radios... Thinking about it, The DIVERT menu in the CDU's NAV menu should show the closest at the top and then the associated tower freq.
Grimes Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 Airfields on the radio list are always sorted by proximity to the player not matter what the radio settings are. The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world. pcalvert Posted April 13, 2012 Author Posted April 13, 2012 yeah - I thought of the divert page (I'll try that tonight)... but I at least thought they would give your airfield in the mission briefing. pcalvert Posted April 13, 2012 Author Posted April 13, 2012 Don't you have to set the radio freqs first - before using the radio menu? Asus Rampage II Extreme, i7 920 @3.8Gh, 6Gb Corsair Dominator 1600hz, Msi GTX 470 Twin Frozr, Corsair 850w Mod PSU, TIR 5, HOTAS WH
Depth Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 Don't you have to set the radio freqs first - before using the radio menu? Nah, you can talk as much as you want into the radio at any time, just don't expect a reply  [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Tailgate Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 I've noticed a nice feature of getting static on the comms when nearing max ranges. I hear it quite often with the Tanker Tacan.
Sceptre Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 You can use the F11 key to cycle through the tower view of all the airfields in the game and it sometimes says in the briefing what airfield you are at.
