I noticed when the ZU-23 units fire on you there is a small explosion in the end of their ammunition flight path... Is there any way to make the exlosions more visible and to maybe make their smoke remain longer in the air... it would definitelly add to the suspense over an heavily AA defended area... and of course, fear of flying over such an area... :joystick:

In every air combat book I read, AA could be detected by smoke and flashes on the ground, and there was always like talk of rounds burst altitude...

The ZSU-23 units are not flak guns. The rounds self-destruct after a given time to reduce the chance that they will cause injury to own troops or other people on the ground. The explosions are reasonably realistic for this type and size of round.

There are no flak guns in DCS.

But can they be changed by a simple file rename for my personal pleasure while flying singleplayer... some .lua .ini geeky stuff maybe? ...cause I want them skies to burn arround me while I rip them tank cans apart... get it? Not related in any way to realism or unit types ingame...

I want this type of thing beneath me, to scare the crap out of my titanium tub:

Arrgh... You just tickled one of my pet peeves! Two of them even! :D

FLAK just means "Flugabwehrkanone", lit. "Air Defence Gun". So to begin with it's redundant - "FLAK gun" is "Air Defence Gun gun"... :P

Also, there is FLAK in the game - for example the Gepard (which is classified as a Flugabwehrkanonenpanzer - "Air defence cannon tank"). :P

It's true that there's none of what people colloquially consider "FLAK" (systems like the FlaK 18 (the "88")), but systems smaller than this iconic weapon are also "FLAK", including things like the ZU-23 and ZSU-23-4. If I remember right the "cutoff" is at 20mm. (So the Vulcan is also a "FLAK".)

There, anal grammar nazi strikes again. Sorry everyone. :D

Tharos, could you tell me what is it that I hear like a boom everytime I turn away from the AO? Its like a missile booming in the air and I think it was meant for me, only I flew on autopilot and got no warning or dispensed flares aptly to counter it..

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

Sure, could be a missile exploding near you. If it was launched at max range it might not actually be able to hit you. If it was launched by an SA-10 you might get no warning, either.

I see we went slightly off the flak explosion topic... so, are there any suggestions about changing the explosion model or we call this topic closed...?

Indeed. 20mm up is considered a cannon or Kanone in german.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.
