cichlidfan Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 Let me start by saying that I have not tested this thoroughly yet but it has appeared to happen multiple times. When I cold start, if I unlock the stick by clicking the red button with the mouse, then pulling it back to lock the tailwheel, I have no steering. However, if I never hit that red button, ignore it completely, and just pull the stick back and taxi, I can steer properly. Maybe there is something else I am doing, or not doing, but it really seems like hitting that unlock button prevents me from being able to lock the tailwheel after that. PeterP Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 (edited) Everything is beauty-full explained in the "Taxi" training mission. In a nutshell: When you pull the stick back, the tail-wheel is looked and can only move 6° to each side. When you have the stick position beyond the center in froward direction, the tail-wheel is free moving. Edit: and I can't reproduce the the behaviour you have experienced, not being able to look the wheel once I looked the stick... Edited May 19, 2012 by PeterP
sobek Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 The stick does not default to locked upon rampstart. Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!

In a nutshell: When you pull the stick back, the tail-wheel is looked and can only move 6° to each side. When you have the stick position beyond the center in froward direction, the tail-wheel is free moving. I get that. The problem is that if I use the red button to unlock the stick, then pulling back on the stick doesn't lock the wheel like it is supposed to. I had the stick in my stomach, and full left rudder and the plane turned right. Did the exact same thing without hitting the red button and everything worked just fine. I agree that it makes no sense. sobek Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 You probably locked the stick forward. As i said, it does not default to locked on rampstart. Plz supply a track, if you will. Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!
cichlidfan Posted May 19, 2012 Author Posted May 19, 2012 The stick does not default to locked upon rampstart. I was doing it based on this instruction in the FM, page 121. Controls – adjust the rudder pedals to comfortable position, then unlock the controls and check to see that they operate without binding. Watch the control surfaces for correct response. and this on page 20 of the Quick Start Guide. 6- Press red Control Lock button to free stick control. I don't recall what the startup training did in this regard. Will do so tomorrow. As I said, unless I am mistaken, the stick in the cockpit was not locked, it followed my controller. I do have some gray hair though so...;) Edited May 19, 2012 by cichlidfan ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero, i7-6700K, Noctua NH-D14 Cooler, Crucial 32GB DDR4 2133, Samsung 950 Pro NVMe 256GB, Samsung EVO 250GB & 500GB SSD, 2TB Caviar Black, Zotac GTX 1080 AMP! PeterP Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 (edited) Made some further testing- , and the only possible answer is that you maybe did it without letting the Tail-wheel go back in center position after it was moving around. To be able to look the wheel, after it is off-center, you have to bring it first back in to the center position. So it can "snap in" - Just move a little straight forward, so it can center again. and than it will stay there if you have pulled the stick back. Edited May 19, 2012 by PeterP

I will have to mess with it later tomorrow. lobo Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 (edited) That red button is to engage the control lock. It has two holes in the locking lug. When you use the bottom hole, the tailwheel is locked along with the controls. Using the top hole leaves the tailwheel full swivelling so the plane can be towed. In the sim I have never seen it engaged. or had to disengage it unless I engaged it. I did try it once on the landing roll out. It went into the top hole and then things got really exciting for the next few seconds till the dust settled. :joystick: Edited May 19, 2012 by lobo** Lobo's DCS A-10C Normal Checklist & Quick Reference Handbook current version 8D available here: http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/172905/
