I'm considering getting this sim, but I am unable to use TrackIR at all, and so there must be good support for non-TrackIR users in order for me to fly in this. For example, I need to be able to pan with the keyboard without the camera automatically centering when I let go of the pan key, and I need to be able to adjust the speed and acceleration of the pan, and so on. How does DCS's camera system work? Can someone help me out by explaining in detail what a non-TrackIR user's options are in here?

there is mouse view. L-ALT+ C. or hats on your joystick. through lua file editing you can change the speed things move at. there are snap vue functions as well. so you are well catered for without head tracking.

save some money, easy on booze, cinemas, and chicks, and you can shell for a TIR4Pro bundle. its not that expensive, and it's a lifetime investment. not only could you use it for flight sims, arma 2 and other 6DOF games are boring without it. there was time I were like you, then I decided, and it delivered.

AWAITING ED NEW DAMAGE MODEL IMPLEMENTATION FOR WW2 BIRDS

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

I used a TrackIR for about two years, back in the day, so I am pretty well acquainted with it. It is no longer an option for me. However, as long as I am able to adjust both speed and acceleration for pan view, I will be reasonably able to keep track of things. Worked pretty well in Rise of Flight, once the speed and acceleration values were fine-tuned and once I got used to it.

Oh! What about zoom? Can I make it so that I have only three zoom states? The way I like do to it is, I have "fully zoomed in," "fully zoomed out," and "normal zoom," each to its own key, and the transition to each one is instant. Can this be done (perhaps by aforementioned lua files), along with the pan acceleration?

If you had given me that advice years ago, I guess I could have bought a P-51D today. ;)

Quiz.

As much as many of us enjoy Track IR. If you have reason not to use it then ok. DCS is very versatile and between being able to save snap views and edit lua files along with the many configurable controls, i see no reason that you could not greatly enjoy this sim. All pan controls can be mapped to a joystick hat or keyboard commands and by default do not snap back to centre (there is another key for that) I guess speed and acceleration will be editable in an .lua file somewhere. I used to have three stages of zoom by setting custom deadzones and saturation limits on an analog axis on my x52 joystick (in game axis settings). The custom snap views can be made so that the key needs held or so that they toggle with a quick press. In short DCS (imho) is the greatest flight sim ever. It takes a narrow and specific area of aviation and recreates it with great realism and detail unlike FSX for example which tries to cover nearly everything. It is this quality and immersion that means much of the community are enthusiasts who can justify expensive equipment, but do not take this to mean that its all neccesary to enjoy the game.

@Echo Have you tried DCS World yet? No purchases are needed and you can use the Su-25T (included free) to checkout what can be done with the view system.

I can tell you that it isn't quite as easy to adjust, or as flexible, as it is in ROF but with adjusting some of the lua file parameters you should be able to adjust it to your liking.

Yes. DCS World is fully functional on its own with the exception of MP play. As a single player sim it can do everything except let you fly the 'pay' aircraft or use CA features.

CA features?

The 'non-flying' Combined Arms module is not an aircraft but it does add capability to the sim.
