Speed Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 http://warthognews.blogspot.com/ The F-35, on paper anyways, will replace the F-16 and A-10 in the USAF inventory. I don't honestly see how a single engine airframe can replace a two engine one but that's just me and knowing how many F-16s we lost at Moody back in the 90s because of one bird going down the intake. Really, is that all you got for us? You disappoint me! ;) You didn't mention the fact that F-35 flies too fast, has crappy endurance, could be taken down by a small child throwing rocks if it gets too low, has much less fire power, is very expensive... one guy who served in Iraq and Afghanistan told me it's also much easier and faster to get clearance to put GAU-8 rounds on a target than it is to get a 500 lb JDAM. Anyway, maybe you didn't make these points because you're tired of repeating them yourself :D Personally, I think that when the A-10s airframes start wearing out for good, they should just start producing all-new, updated and refined airframes, something like the did with the original F/A-18 Hornet and the new Super Hornet. The Super Hog? :) Either that, or whole new design for CAS. Replacing the A-10 with the F-35 is a joke. Intelligent discourse can only begin with the honest admission of your own fallibility. Fjordmonkey Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 How can F35 replace A10? It can't, but you won't be able to convince the Fast-jet proponents in the Pentagon about this, sadly. With the eventual phase-out of the A10, you loose a very important quality in a battlespace: the ability to fly CAS/BAI-missions very close to friendly lines. A burst of 30mm HEI does a whole lot less damage than a 500lbs JDAM, but it won't flatten a good portion of the area surrounding the target-area. I personally don't think you'll be able to fly the same missions with the F35 as is done today with the A10. The A10 is purpose-built for the mission it does, while the F35 tries to be a jack-of-all-trades. And in many cases, trying to do too many things leads you to do none of them well. I'd love to see what happens to an F35 that gets hit with something as simple as a chance burst from a ZSU-23-4. An A10 would most likely be able to get the pilot home, but I don't have the same amount of faith that an F35 would. Regards Fjordmonkey Clustermunitions is just another way of saying that you don't like someone. I used to like people, then people ruined that for me.

Sierra99 Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 How can F35 replace A10? It can't. The A-10 was designed from the start as a Close Air Support aircraft and optmized for that mission. The F-35 was designed from the start to be... "Flexable" and as such it's not optomized for ANYTHING. The F35/JSF is an airplane nobody ever really wanted from the start. The idea was they were going to buy 1 airframe and then customize it to the needs of The Air Force, Navy and Marines... They figured out a long time a ago they've had to make way too many compromises and in the end, We will have an airplane that does lots of things...good enough. Will they retire A-10s and replace them with F-35s... Probably. Can the F-35 do Cloase Air Support missions... Sure it can. Is the aircraft optomized for CAS? Nope, truth is its not optomized for anything... Which is going to be a problem.
