TZeer Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 Thinking about upgrading from a 24" (1900x1200) to a 27" (2560x1440). Currently I'm running 2x GTX 580 1,5Gb VRAM in SLI. How much of a performance hit will the increase in resolution be? As of now, I can run the game at 60FPS stable (vsync on) most of the time. In certain areas it dips down to 40-50, but that's due to CPU bottleneck (i7 3820@ 4,6 GHz) and not the GPU's fault. Will I still be able to get stable 60FPS @ 2560x1440 resolution? Thanks
Quirkitized Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 I have a very similar system, two 3gb gtx 580s, i5 3570k @ 4.5 and run a 2560x1440 monitor. To answer your question, you will get 60fps in very light missions, and flying over areas not well crowded. You'll still dip a lot, sometimes in the 30s. It's more than playable, this is with 3gb 580s though. Just keep that in mind, the higher the resolution, the more vram you will use (typically.) I am sure you'll still be happy with your performance, the increase in screen real estate is great and typically monitors that have 2560x1400 resolution are very good IPS panels.

Thanks You are increasing your pixel count by nearly 75% (from about 2 megapixels to 3.7 megapixels). It is going to hit your performance. By how much I can't say but I am fairly certain that you are going to see the difference. On a separate note, that kind of resolution is just awesome. But I changed some small numbers in the graphics.cfg file, and everything got a whole lot smoother. Normally when I have experienced those dips, it's not the GPU that has been heavily loaded, but the CPU. Using nvidia inspector you can see that the GPU usage goes down, while the CPU usage in task manager goes up.

This very highly depends on the amount of AA you use, maxing out all graphic options, cockpit display (512 or 1024) and mission load (amount of units, stuff going on.) I originally upgraded from 1.5GB 580s to 3GB ones when I had three monitors, I think you'll be okay at 2560x1440. I am also running the game at the moment without any modifications or tweaks as I just rebuilt with the ivybridge cpu. So there is room for improvement. You'll be fine, grab a nice IPS 2560x1440 and enjoy :)

I looked at the Dell v3011 when I bought my u2711 and the price difference made no sense. BTW, most of the 2560x1600 models have a slightly smaller dpi that their 1440 counterparts.
