nscode Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 MiG29 can actually do that  Hell, even MiG-21 can... it's in the manual :D Along with using unguided rockets against air targets :) Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
aaron886 Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 The sad thing with learning how to fly and fight jets - the movies you loved as a kid suddenly get destroyed. :P *Computer jets :D
Pyroflash Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 ..it can break glass buildings as well.. The real question is how the glass can get broken, but the people survive despite the intense pressure and heat that those engines generate. I mean, they kind of just stood there in horror, not getting burned or blown away or anything.. If you aim for the sky, you will never hit the ground.

Exorcet Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 It sounds fun until you consider the time people would have to spend watching all of this "inaction". A lot of it is just planes flying around and "not doing anything". This is because most people don't understand the complexities behind it all and expect air combat to be all shooty shooty. I think looking at it like that is the problem with the air combat movie. It shouldn't be boring, even for the lay person. There is a lot going on in air combat, you just need to show it, and if need be assist viewers in understanding it. There is also no reason why you can't have "shooty" action. Surprise attacks and dogfights can still occur in modern aerial warfare. I can only hope for a realistic air combat movie, done right I think it could wipe out the boring stereotypical movies of old. Echo38 Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Yeah--you can have a realistic air combat movie, without spending half an hour showing the ground crew preparing the airplane. Honestly ... who the heck really thinks that in order for a movie's air combat to be realistic, you have to show every single aspect of the fighter pilot's experience? You skip the writing of reports, the lengthy briefing, the five-minute startup procedure, etc. etc. and simply cut to the parts people find interesting. That doesn't mean you can't realistically portray the parts that you do show! It isn't a binary switch between "a reality show of a combat pilot's life" and "cruddy-physics Hollywood nonsense;" if only movie producers could realize that there's an in-between: realistic portrayal of air combat, with the less-interesting preparations cut out.
Aginor Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Hey guys! Sorry for the thread necro, but I saw the movie yesterday on German TV (for the first time) and had some fun. So here's my small review on it. Keep in mind I didn't read what's posted in this thread before writing my review, so you might know some of it already. It is called "Into the Sun" in german (not kidding, it has a different but still english title in german, like many movies. For some reason I still can't understand.) The movie is about some ROKAF pilots flying around, fighting MiGs and stuff (IMDB has a small summary). It has some scenes right out of "Top Gun", just with other planes, and of course it features flight physics, weapons usage and military behaviour approximately as accurate as "Top Gun" or "Red Tails". When I sat down to watch it I expected a trash movie to be honest, but the story was still somewhat entertaining (at least for me), and during the film there are more scenes with planes in them than in other comparable movies. Lots of scenes are actually set either in the hangar or in the air, and at least it isn't boring (remember Blue Tornado?). The special effects are done nicely (IIRC by the same special effects team as Transformers and Iron Man, at least I think saw a commercial claiming that). Beware though, it is a korean movie, so it uses some typical asian TV tropes that might not be clear for Europeans or Americans, and it is pretty patriotic. The film was also heavily supported by ROKAF. So expect most of their inventory featured prominently, including F-15K, FA-50, 737AEW&C, UH-60, CH-47 and HH-32 (Ka-32A4). Overall I was pleasantly surprised by this movie, which is often compared to Top Gun. But that may just be the lack of Tom Cruise and because I really liked the girl mechanic. And yes, I am aware it isn't exactly realistic or good, but hey, do you know a "plane movie" that is? Anyone else seen the movie lately and has comments on it? RAZBAM_ELMO Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Actually just found that this evening while at work and watched it, besides the Korean dialogue a very good watch, tactics and maneouvers and such all in place and awesome Know and use all the capabilities in your airplane. If you don't, sooner or later, some guy who does use them all will kick your ass. — Dave 'Preacher' Pace, USN.
Aginor Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 I am not sure, are you talking about the korean version of the movie or did you watch an english one that had korean dialogues in it? Because the german version didn't have any korean in it at all as far as I remember. DCSW weapons cheat sheet speed cheat sheet

Pretty much, A good moviemaker can also make things very dramatic and interesting, even though nothing's really going on:
