Hels Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 First post, long time lurker. Been slowly but surely having my urge to not binge out on simming stuff widdle away. Anyways I come to ya'll modders and master builders, tinkerers and handymen with a question. I've recently destroyed my laptop (well an IC burnt up and I can't seem to find a motherboard replacement, Sager NP5135 for what its worth). I parted it out and am in the process of figuring out what to do with the stuff. Make an external HDD out of the HDD, and I now have a spare 1920x1080 LCD screen floating around. It has a plug on the end of it, and isn't one of those terrible ribbon things. What I'm hoping is that maybe I could salvage that screen, slap some converter thing on it (is what its looking like) and hook it up as a third monitor. Wondering if any of you have had any luck or experience with this sort of thing? I would love to use this as a third monitor (for MFDs or trouble shooting, etc). Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Yes It's possible - but simply buying a second hand Monitor will probably be much chaper and less timeconsuming as buying the needed "converters"and learning how everything has to be put together.

Yeah, this is pretty much the case. Certainly it's doable, but it might end up being nearly as expensive and definitely much, much more time consuming than just getting a used desktop display. iControl DCS/DCS Virtual Cockpit - Full featured iPad Cockpit - Now with Android support! KLR Rico Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 Agree. I looked into wiring up laptop displays before (I have several lying around), and it's a lot of work. This is the most promising link I've found about it: http://g3nius.org/lcd-controller/ I've seen decent LCD monitors for as low as $10-20 on craigslist and in thrift stores, so that took away a lot of the desire I had to hack together a laptop panel. i5-4670K@4.5GHz / 16 GB RAM / SSD / GTX1080 Rift CV1 / G-seat / modded FFB HOTAS

Agreed, there is a used hardware place near me that must have fifty lcd monitors at any given time. The prices are a bit more since it's a store instead of craigslist but still cheap.
