please ED, clarify that the Autoupdater let us still use mods as previously. . .

A fix that requires a fix that requires a fix is not a good fix, that's the point.

In my opinion, you learn to live with those little issues. Having each of them replaced with another one on a daily basis is no good either. So I would rather have release cycles of one or two weeks with good fixes than what it was like the last days (for me at least)

Can anyone point to instructions as to how to build a Modman folder structure. There are a number of neat mods and I'd like to convert them so I can do the remove-update DCS-reinstall dance.

It seems you just need to put the DCS folders (i.e. config, sounds) in the root of a ZIP. I've converted a couple of mods and that's worked for me anyway. If there's a text file in the root of the ZIP, Modman will display that when selecting the mod as well.

1) Use a mod manager such as JSGME

2) Turn off game auto-updating i.e. only update manually

3) Mods off before updating

4) Update game

5) Check updated game for file changes, edit / update mods as needed

6) Reinstall updated mods

And Robert's your dad's brother ;)

Is JSGME compatible with DCS as it creates a mods folder but DCS already uses a mods folder, so JSGME shows mods\aircrafts as a mod.

Does JSGME also not have the same problem as Modman, in that when installing mods it makes a backup of the default files, so if DCS updates and then I uninstall a mod, it will overwrite the updated files with the older backup files?

I don't know about Modman, but JSGME operates in a folder level above the target program.

So if you have your DCS in D:\Games\DCS World you will put your JSGME.exe into D:\Games and use D:\Games\Mods as your mod folder.

In this mod folder, you put a folder named after your mod and there you put the folders and files in that you wanna change. So you'd want to change DCS World\Config\graphics.lua your modded file woud be:

D:\Games\Mods\Graphicsmod\DCS World\Config\graphics.lua

There is a Backup folder in \Mods and if you autoupdate your modded files will be replaced with the defaults, but all you need to to is to open JSGME, disable the mods and enable them again.

Hmm, the readme for JSGME says to install it to the games root folder.

I also suspect that if I autoupdate DCS and then disable a mod, it will restore the backed-up files, overwriting any new ones with the old ones. I guess if I disable the mods before updating and then enable them again afterwards it will be OK, I'll just have to disable the autoupdate which I'm not sure how to do and then I'd have to keep checking the forum to see if there's an update.

Sorry, you are right of course. I've done it the way I described so I could use a single JSGME to handle mods for both DCS World and A-10C standalone rather than having two JSGME.exe and two modfolders. The name of the folder containing the mods is customizable. So you can put JSGME into \DCS World and have the mods in \DCS World\JSGMEMods

But anyways, you can do it the way I do and JSGME doesn't touch the Game folders for anything else than putting the modded files in.

That is true. I'd recommend disabling all mods before updating.

OK. I'm only using it for DCS World at the moment so it makes sense to have it in there for now but I can't see any way to customise the MODS folder name. It seems to be working OK, I'd just rather not have it using the same folder as DCS does, so if I can't change it maybe I'll just move it up a level as you've done.

OK. I guess I just need to change the desktop shortcut to run Launcher instead of auto-updater to avoid any mistakes?

There doesn't seem to be an option to change the path in the gui, but it should have asked you the first time you ran it. Anyways, check the JSGME.ini in the same path as the .exe. It should start with

[MODS FOLDER]

Name=MODS

Name=xxx points to the directory your mods are stored in. So just change it here and rename the folder.

But maybe you are using a different version that doesn't have the option yet. You can download the one that I am using in the attachment.

Changing the shortcut to launch the game directly rather than the updater is one option. But unless you have disabled UAC, the updates shouldn't be applied without confirmation anyways.

Thanks. With the one I have it doesn't actually have a .ini next to the .exe but there is one in the MODS folder, although that doesn't have that section either and starts with [FORM SIZE] followed by [MODS]. I've just tried the one you uploaded and that works great. The one I had was dated 2007 whilst yours is dated 2010!

Yeah, I do have UAC disabled as it just annoys me. I can't recall if the updater gave me a choice to proceed or if it just informed me that there was an update but even if it gives a choice, it's still too easy to accidentally click proceed without first disabling the mods, so it's safer if I just check for updates manually.

Glad it's workin now :)

I don't think there is any other confirmation aside from UAC...
