When flying the 25T fitted with the elint pod does it detect all radar targets that are transmitting or just those locking onto me?

From the "DCS World Su-25T Flight Manual EN.pdf"

On page 36, "Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD Mode)":

The Su-25T aircraft can employ Kh-25MPU and Kh-58 antiradiation missiles (ARMs) against a variety of radio transmitter targets including surface-to-air missile (SAM) search, tracking, and target illumination radars. Since radio transmitters operate over a wide band of frequencies, not all transmitters can be targeted by all ARMs. For example, most antiradiation missiles are not designed for use against mobile anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) which use high frequency radars with short range.

Antiradar missiles require the Su-25T to carry the L-081 "Fantasmagoria" ARM control pod under the aircraft centerline (hardpoint #6).

...and there is more detail provided later on in the manual, page 64:

The Su-25T can employ the Kh-25MPU and Kh-58 anti-radiation missiles against surface radars. To target these weapons, the "Fantasmagoria" L-081 emitter targeting system pod is suspended from the belly of the aircraft. This pod detects the radar emissions of an air defense radar and cues the missile to the designated target.

You can find a link to the manual in: Start >> Programs >> Eagle Dynamics

My understanding is that the Fantasmagoria ARM control pod can detect and lock onto transmitters that are emitting (within certain frequency limitations). period.

In other words, you can target them with ARM even if they haven't locked you up.

There are probably tons of RL caveats to this and I am not sure how well DCSW models it all, but it's probably fairly sandbox'ish, but yet good enough to give us that additional component.

Hope that helps.

Too bad it can't lock Airborne Radar. That would make the su25t the best fighter :)

Funny you should say that :music_whistling:

That is a for-real story. I don't know if the Su-25T ARM system prevents locking up airborne emitters, if DCSW correctly simulates that functionality if it exists in RL, or if you actually can lock up airborne emitters in DCSW (I don't think so based on the manual).

The main issue with hitting an airborne emitter from a fast mover is that the missile was designed for a much less agile target than a maneuvering aircraft. At least that's my take on it. However, since ARMs are passive... you might just get lucky.

In either Desert Storm or Iraqi Freedom (maybe both), I've heard that enemy radar operators would listen on the radios for Coalition forces to call out "Magnum", which is the radio call you make when firing an ARM like an AGM-88. When they heard "Magnum" they'd switch "OFF" their radar set to avoid the inbound missile... I believe that Coalition forces would even spoof this and just make the call and see some radar sites go dark! Someone else more versed in their lore than I can correct me if I'm wrong.

Cheers!

Well... the newer ARMs might have some brains so that they go where the last emission came from.

Did you try moving your vehicle after the ARM was launched at you (thinking of a mobile radar AA vehicle like Tunguska, or something)?

the game doesn't model sidelobe mainlobe etc with radar, so if you are not inside a lobe you can't detect the radar irl . in Game the pod is cheating ,same for RWR

Newer ARM's do have the capability to track a targets latest position when it stops emitting.

Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing

Some are designed to do that..

The ALARM can either fly to the last known position or fly up high deploy a parachute and loiter..

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.
