Every now and then, a few friends and I like to get together, bring our PCs, connect to the router and play some 'face to face' DCS World. Currently we have 4 computers for 4 players, with one person also acting as the server.

I'm thinking about building a new PC and using the my old one as a dedicated server for the group of us. So 5 PCs for 4 players. Has anyone tried this yet? I was hoping a dedicated server would take a big processing load off of the clients for hopefully better frame rates and a smoother sim.

Just wondering what other people's experiences were with setting up a LAN Client/Server configuration.

Thanks.

I have used a LAN setup in DRAGON's Multiplayer missions just for myself, but not using DCS World. Think I used BS2. It worked great.

I don't know what the rules are concerning a LAN server. The typical server setup, I think you will need an additional license for the server. Running the LAN just for myself, I don't think I need an additional license.

We Use frequently whit Hamachi...

You must download Hamachi, create a server...than your friend's must download hamachi, partecipate in a server (yours) ... Clic right button in Hamachi screen on your contact, copy IPV4...

Than... You must open a mission in multiplayer using Lan and setting all interface at IP...

When mission is loaded, your friend can insert your IPV4 in Connection by IP pressing left ctrl + v...

Pay attention if you use Pssw for server and for mission...In Lan I dont use them..

Best regard...

I guess what I'm really asking is if anyone who has tried using a dedicated LAN server PC (one that is used to load a mission and everyone playing connects to it), have you seen better/smoother game play on the clients? Does the addition of a dedicated server on your LAN make the game better for players?

Does the off-loading of the server tasks onto a dedicated server machine make the sim better for the clients on the LAN?

I know the LAN works because we have tried it. Just wondering if adding a dedicated server PC makes a difference.

Thanks.

Well, running a public dedicated server is the same as a LAN-party.

The only difference is you most likely dont know who will join in and what level of knowkedge they have of the game.

There is a performance difference for the serverhost when this person uses a different machine to host and connect to that himself like any other player. Makes sence as the machine you play on has more resourches for your gameplay and doesnt need to serve too.

I think this is what youre trying to find out isnt it?

Not sure what you need Hamachi for.

Open multiplayer interface, select "new server", while having in Server Type Internet you'll see your IP adress under "interface". Give your friend(s) this IP, then switch yourself to LAN, start, and you're all set.

You do not need tunnling or anything like this to run in LAN mode. While running like this, it'll simply not be announced on Master Server, but there is no absolute restriction on having to be in an actual LAN, real or virtualized, for it to work.

Yeah, we never had to use any additional software.

I was just asking to see if anyone realized a performance boost on the clients when using a dedicated server PC that exclusively ran 'The World' on the LAN.

I really hope ED is considering implementing multi-threading in a future World update. I don't see CPUs getting much past 5GHz, even with overclocking, anytime soon.

However, having the workload spread over 6 cores at ~4GHz would be Phenominal. Get it...Phenominal...6 Cores...

Well, 90% of the time, my jokes are for me anyway. :megalol:

Huh?

Not sure what you're trying to explain, EtherealN, but the IP will be the local one.

I.e. if you're behind a router, you'll see something like 192.168.0.10 => that IP you can give to all friends, none will connect unless they are behind your own router too. ;)

Hm. That's not what I'm seeing. I'll have to swap setup and try it out.

EDIT: Yup, you're right. I wasn't on the connection I thought I was when I checked - when I switchover to the router I get what you say. Using my cellular (which is what I usually use when playing) there's no router in between, and that's what I saw. Got mixed up with which connection I was on.

BRooDJeRo, how's this for simplicity: type "ip" into chrome, then press enter. Google will do the rest for you. :)

Hey guys, I´ve tried to make direct LAN connection with my pc acting as a server, BUT in DCS World multiplayer I miss one important thing and that is change in connection type (there not this option) just direct IP. The same is in the New server option.

Do you have some advice how to play directly via LAN?

Thank you

Actually using VPN will worsen (networking) performance because the additional tunneling layer will add overhead.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.
