SharpeXB Posted November 23, 2012 Posted November 23, 2012 The FC3 manual says the VSD shows a radar picture in a plan view from above your aircraft. Is that correct? It seemed to me this display is showing a view of what is in front of your aircraft the way it depicts the horizon line and ASE steering error circle. Does it switch when you go to STT or TWS mode? i9-14900KS | ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO | 64GB DDR5 5600MHz | iCUE H150i Liquid CPU Cooler | ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 4090 OC | Windows 11 Home | 2TB Samsung 980 PRO NVMe | Corsair RM1000x | LG 48GQ900-B 4K OLED Monitor | CH Fighterstick | Ch Pro Throttle | CH Pro Pedals | TrackIR 5

The view is top-down and, while the VSD is square, your radar scan zone is a cone. So the VSD is a flat representation of that cone. Or think of it this way. Those vertical parallel lines on the VSC are all actually pointing at your nose. If there is an aircraft marching down one of those lines with no deviation right or left and you are co-altitude, he will pass through your cockpit. EDIT: The views stays the same regardless of the radar mode you are in. SharpeXB Posted November 23, 2012 Author Posted November 23, 2012 Ok so when it shows you the bank angle and ASE steering circle like is on your HUD, those are just superimposed for reference on the plan view? Your own aircraft isn't shown on here for reference like on the TAD in the A-10C. I assume you are just at the bottom center of the screen, or are you in the center like on the RWS? The radar only looks forward right? i9-14900KS | ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO | 64GB DDR5 5600MHz | iCUE H150i Liquid CPU Cooler | ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 4090 OC | Windows 11 Home | 2TB Samsung 980 PRO NVMe | Corsair RM1000x | LG 48GQ900-B 4K OLED Monitor | CH Fighterstick | Ch Pro Throttle | CH Pro Pedals | TrackIR 5

Yep Your own aircraft isn't shown on here for reference like on the TAD in the A-10C. I assume you are just at the bottom center of the screen, or are you in the center like on the RWS? The radar only looks forward right?Yes your nose is at the bottom of the screen. Your radar is a moving plate in the F-15 nose, so it can only look forward I highly recommend to take a look at Ironhand's website (click on his signature) there are some really useful tutorials regarding the F-15C. A few things differ from FC2 but they're really helpful non the less Edited November 23, 2012 by Eight Ball Find The Links To All My Mods And Liveries Here (in the gallery)
EtherealN Posted November 23, 2012 Posted November 23, 2012 Ok so when it shows you the bank angle and ASE steering circle like is on your HUD, those are just superimposed for reference on the plan view? They are there to make heads-down flying less dangerous for those times when you have to work your instruments a lot. Your own aircraft isn't shown on here for reference like on the TAD in the A-10C. I assume you are just at the bottom center of the screen, or are you in the center like on the RWS? The radar only looks forward right? You have a plan view, but it is not like the TAD on the A-10C. See page 106 of the FC3 manual. It explains everything. Pay specific attention to the gridboxes, and there are also some smaller notches at the bottom. One grid = 30 degrees. One notch in the center is 10 degrees. So you are not looking at a "map" from the top - in that case therge would be large areas on that thing where there would be no coverage at all because the radar is limited in slew. So side-to-side: 30 degree notches from your radar. Top-to-down notches: partitions the range scale. There are 3 video tutorials concerning the F-15's radar nad its modes that you can download on the A2A page. You might find them helpful, even though they are for a previous version of the sim. GGTharos Posted November 23, 2012 Posted November 23, 2012 The technical name for the VSD's visualization of the airspace is called 'B-Scope'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radar_display In the case of the VSD, it takes a pie and displays it as a square ... so like Rich said, the entire bottom of your radar screen is your radar dish - to make it simple, it is the single point of emission of your radar energy. Instead of showing it to you as a pie shape, it shows it to you as a square, thus making certain pilot maths etc easier, as well as better breakout of targets at closer ranges.
