Been flying the BTF campaign and ran into a hurdle with the Formation Flying mission. I set up a practice mission and although I'm getting better I feel I must be missing something.

 

What advice would you guys give to stay with your wingman in a turn, left or right, starting on the inside or outside the turn?

Flying tight formation is actually quite hard... you have to keep concentration at high at all times (especially in turns) but for loose formations just relax a little, if you fly with lead that is human and are on comms, tell him to not go always full power and leave some throttle movement buffer for you as a wing as you need to keep adjusting it all the time (in small increments). The rest is just about practice and getting the hang of it till it becomes natural. One pre-requisite for formation flying is smooth input for the stick so some cheap stick will not do.

Two things that I want to add although they could be obvious:

 

1.: Control lateral spacing by adjusting heading,

Control fore/aft with power

Somewhere I read (simHQ?) that you should 1. get to the same altitude, 2. get the speed right and only then and 3. reduce your separation.

 

The other thing (from someone on these boards - Tyger?) is to not be ashamed to loosen it to get into a more controlled position. Being farther away gives you a way bigger tolerance to get sthablished again.

Don't wrestle the stick hold it gentle, use small adjustments of power and banking, try not to use the rudder to line up. Keep practicing by focusing on keeping the lead at one specific point in relation to your canopy frame, start at a comfortable distance then as your ability to hold position improves move closer.
