I am new to the flight sim genre and trying to set up my joystick before first takeoff.

My joystick has 8 buttons on the base and 4 on the stick. Through the joystick software the buttons can be set to 3 different profiles via a selector switch, effectively giving me 3x12 = 36 Buttons to assign. The stick also has dual throttle and rudder control.

What are the most used buttons I should start assigning first?

I was thinking maybe the buttons you actually use in-flight are most important, since the start-up stuff can be easily done by mouse and/or keyboard.

It'd be great if some of the experienced pilots could give me advice on what functions to assign, aka which functions are most often used.

Welcome to the flight sim community! You picked quite a simulation to start off with. Expect to put some effort in, before you can go around happily bombing tanks to oblivion. The training missions (with update) are a good starting point.

If you could perhaps reveal to us which model it is, there might very well already be a profile available for it.

The button map for the HOTAS is the best place to start. The map defines each button and it's function in various operating modes.

The good news you don't have do a lot of thinking about where best to map each button. That's already been decided for you based on best practice and experience of real pilots.

If you don't have Track IR you'll have to compromise the standard HOTAS layout and assign one of the hat switches to pan the camera, a major bummer since it compounds the problem.

Hi and welcome, for my part, the most important are the TRIM, TMS, CMS(at least to release), weapons release and triggers of course, Speedbrakes, Master mode and CHINA. What's the model?

Anyway, you will quickly realize what is your need or not, also don't forget to add a modifier, I've a switch for my hat which allows me to use it to slew and lock the designator and Trim the aircraft...
