Hi,

last night I was flying a Fast mission. Previously during the mission, I was getting a RWR notification that there was a SU-27 around. I avoided this like the plague.

however, later on I was making an attack run on some T72s, and I got hit by an AA missile from a Su-17m4. There was no warning, just a huge bang, 3 feet of my left wing gone, left engine out, leaking hydraulics, etc. I limped back to Batumi and got down in more or less one piece.

Should I have received a RWR warning for this plane/launch? I know it's a heat-seeker. If not, what can I do to help prevent this?

It might have happened to fire on you from an RWR blind spot.

As far as avoidance goes, spending more time with your eyes outside the cockpit is about all you can do.

If you're flying with AWACS support pay attention to their calls too. (I don't think the fast missions include AWACS by default though.)

When I played the track back, he was flying about 3000 ft below me at about 11 o'clock with his landing gear down. He was only abou 5 nm from me as well.

No AWACs in the Fast missions, no.

Might have been IR missile? There is no RWR warning for those.

It was an AA-8. Just looked it up in Wikipedia, it is indeed IR guided.

Since I've turned labels off, I seem to be getting myself shot down alot by these guys.

That's mostly problem of fast missions, I would say. Normally (RL, campaign, multiplayer), you would have a CAP or escort flight there to protect you from the enemy fighters.

There won't be any prior indication but you should get a missile warning (which works on detecting the missile plume I believe, hence why you get maverick launches setting off the launch warning.)

Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing

That's not from the RWR, its the MWS. Although both display information to the pilot on the IP-1310 display, they are separate systems.

Which missile plumes, if any, can't the MWS detect?

Provided they are in its FoV a UV based system can detect any type of missile, as well as the occasional reflection of sunlight, and other sources of false indications.

The major weakness of UV based systems (apart from their inability to determine if a threat is actually heading for you, and how far away it is) is that they can only detect a missile while its motor is burning
