gavagai Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Hi everyone, I took advantage of the sale, and now I feel silly for not having bought the P-51D sooner. The feeling of flight and the aircraft systems seem very well done. The in-cockpit training tutorials are very helpful. After a couple hours of practice, I can do all of the basics: cold-start, take-off, and land. I see a few frustrated posts here and there, so I'm pointing out that completing the in-cockpit training tutorials is well worth the time. Perhaps my one caveat is that the recommended 5 degrees of rudder trim for takeoff is a little bit excessive. If you are used to prop sims and the normally requisite right rudder on takeoff, 2 or 3 degrees might be more appropriate. With 5 degrees I find that I have to apply a little bit of left rudder, and that is just weird! P-51D | Fw 190D-9 | Bf 109K-4 | Spitfire Mk IX | P-47D | WW2 assets pack | F-86 | Mig-15 | Mig-21 | Mirage 2000C | A-10C II | F-5E | F-16 | F/A-18 | Ka-50 | Combined Arms | FC3 | Nevada | Normandy | Straight of Hormuz | Syria
ZaltysZ Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 I don't trim at all as it is not hard to correct yawing tendency with rudder pedals. Most people are having problems with take off because they are too pushy with the plane: use too much power on runway roll and/or lift the tail too soon or too quickly. If it is done in gentle way, P51 will take off like on rails. Wir sehen uns in Walhalla.
Robo. Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 I agree gavagai, no rudder trim is actually easier for me. I remember though that in the beta version of the game, it was a bit more difficult to take off without the 5 degrees rudder. The tutorials have been created in the very beginning and I guess some things have changed since. The tutorials are superb and well worth going through as I see lots of new pilots struggling with the startup posting on the forums. I do know your nickname from RoF ;)
johnnychemo Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Good tip on the no rudder trim. Takeoff tutorial is excellent. I was able to safely take off no problems first time. The plane seemed to lift itself off the runway.
Konrad Friedrich Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Hi, same Gavagai same as the Gavagai from RoF-Forum?
gavagai Posted March 23, 2013 Author Posted March 23, 2013 Yes, same one! I found a funny thing: my aileron and elevator trim wheels seem to be mixed up. Is it just me or is it the same way for others? Easy to work around it, though. Konrad Friedrich Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 (edited) Nice! I always liked to read your constructive contributions in the RoF-forum! Nice to meet you here. The internet is a small village...:smilewink: Welcome to a new addiction! :D Do you mean that your axis assignments are messed up? Can happen in the beginning or when you connect new hardware. I once had a hard time when I had my space navigator (3D mouse for modelling) connected and DCS felt the dire need to assign pitch and roll axis to it... Edited March 23, 2013 by Konrad Friedrich

Easy to work around it, though. I had this problem too, mate. In axis controls, pick aileron trim, click 'FF tune' and chose 'swap axis'.
