otester Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Apart from the R-77 it seems radar guided missiles are largely useless now. Firing an AIM-120/R-27R/R-27ER at anything over 10km seems futile, the missile just runs out of speed really quickly, this is at an altitude of 6700ft, I tried 20000ft and there wasn't much of an improvement. On the infrared side, R-27ET also seemed useless, AIM-9 and R-73 seemed normal though. Is this is a bug or?

Exorcet Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 As was said, missiles are under review. However 7000 feet is extremely low, range would be poor regardless because of drag and because the target would have very high sustained turn rates. 20000 feet isn't that high either. I like to fly at 30000+ feet when firing at long range, though target altitude matters too. If you're flying the F-15, use the AIM-7, it has very low deceleration. Awaiting: DCS F-15C Win 10 i5-9600KF 4.6 GHz 64 GB RAM RTX2080Ti 11GB -- Win 7 64 i5-6600K 3.6 GHz 32 GB RAM GTX970 4GB -- A-10C, F-5E, Su-27, F-15C, F-14B, F-16C missions in User Files

(Last one was November 2012?) As was said, missiles are under review. Oh yeah the AIM-7 worked ok, definitely better than the AIM-120. It seems that the aircraft struggle to hold up at 30000+ in my experience.

theChris Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 are they being tweeked on their effective ranges in the encyclopedia?
blkspade Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 With the missiles the way that they are now, I've found myself flying a lot less online. However when I do, its with altered tactics and loadouts. Even before the missiles were broken I made it a habit to bring some sparrows along, now its just more. The 120s are still effective for either shorter range kills, or just causing some RWR noise in it active phase. That said the AIM-9's are way more awesome now, so they are now getting more pylon time. The AIM-120 right now either get me kills at smedium range, or gets me close enough for a heater shot. http://104thphoenix.com/
GGTharos Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 Most certainly not. They are being tweaked according to the best data available. are they being tweeked on their effective ranges in the encyclopedia? GGTharos Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 I think the encyclopedia is meant to reflect easily accessible public knowledge, but who knows :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda

However when I do, its with altered tactics and loadouts. This is the right mindset. I would do the same and try to adapt to what we've got. Miss-iles, by definition, will never be perfect. HiJack Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 You need to get the enemy close up to you now. Thre is no point in doing campaigns even with these missiles. We either need a quick fix or 1.2.4 now.
