Scarecrow Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Had P51 for a month now and only flew Shadohs Batumi TT up till now, fine weather for flying. Obviously the savage cross winds in the quick mission came as a shock:huh: I managed to get her off the ground and back down again after several attempts but it was as far from safe and controlled as you can be:). So my question here is whats going on with the wind and how is take off and landing done well in these situations?
smnwrx Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 (edited) I'm not sure exactly what condition you attempted to fly in, I figure I should mention that an aircraft usually has a published maximum x-wind limitation( not sure of the p-51's). Sometimes it's just not a good idea to try and take off at all. Otherwise proper technique can help a lot too. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crosswind_landing http://www.planeandpilotmag.com/proficiency/weather-flying/control-the-crosswind.html Edited May 1, 2013 by smnwrx
159th_Viper Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 (edited) So my question here is whats going on with the wind and how is take off and landing done well in these situations? Here's a vid I made with that very mission, also illustrating a take-off from cockpit and external view. Be sure to keep your MP at no higher than 42-45 inHg and she'll fly herself off the ground. In that particular mission the cross-wind is negligible at 3m/s. Might be the turbulence getting to you, especially on landing :) pt54i1_dlys Ps: Recommended safety ceiling for the Mustang is a 25 knot cross-wind which is about 13m/s. If she's blowing any stronger than that then it's probably better to take the train. Edited May 1, 2013 by 159th_Viper Novice or Veteran looking for an alternative MP career? Scarecrow Posted May 1, 2013 Author Posted May 1, 2013 (edited) Ahaha i realised I'd reduced take off assistance in the special options to 0%. When I put it back up to 100% its fine, I only discovered that setting last night and forgot I changed it:music_whistling:. Here I was thinking I'd mastered take off's weeks ago  P.S Thanks for the reply guys I'll have a look a these vids a few times Edited May 1, 2013 by Scarecrow
