Hey guys,

 

I'm a supernoob, started playing DCS no longer than 2 months ago, but I'm totally addicted to it. Since I'm pretty comfortable with the A10C and UH-1 now, I'm broadening my scope and I've started messing around with the Mission Editor. I'm really enthousiastic about it and I've got some hurdles to take ofcourse, but google is my friend and I'll eventually get there.

 

Right now I'm making a single player mission for the UH-1. I'll probably make it compatible for multi player as well (max 4 players, short fast mission). I don't want to start simple, I want to start all out, so I need to learn most aspects of the Mission Editor.

 

One of my top priorities for this mission, and other missions I'll create in the future is immersion. I want the player's heart beating as they rush into action! Hehe, no idea if I can achieve this, but having played simple Huey missions with the music on the FM I know that -speaking for myself at least- cool missions with the Huey gets you going easy enough :)

 

Anyway, lots of blablabla, like I said, I want the player to experience as much immersion as I can offer. This means I'm gonna have a throw at voice acting.

 

BUT, it would be nice if there was a program that could help me with that. Do you guys know a program that can:

-Make a recording sound like it's a radio transmission

-Mix in explosion sounds, gunfire etc

-Make a recording sound like a different person (I'm gonna be the one recording all messages lol, so it would be nice if it could make it sound like another person)

-Make a recording sound like it's coming from a jet or helicopter pilot

I use "Audacity" for this. It is quite easy to handle, but I am no professional sound engineer, so I cannot give you better hints, than to test your record settings in game, before you start to record longer a text. Different radios have different limits in their frequency range so they sound different to the human ear- so adjust your recording frequencies. No use for 44kHz recordings if the real radio can only replay up to 228kHz tunes. Also mono recordings do not only make the sound files smaller, but sound better for immersion.

In the DCS World folder you already have a lot of samples for static backround noise, clicks, gunfire, explosion etc. You can use these to enhance your radio transmissions.

But remember, once the ogg. files is convertet by DCS in the miz file, the sound changes a lot, so test your settings to get the "radio feeling" right in game.

There are a few threads with good advice on this subject.

 

Here's a good place to start for using some basic Audacity filters to make a decent radio call...

There are also built in "AM radio" and "walkie talkie" equalization filters in Audacity that can work well in combo with "high pass" and "hard limiter" filters. Best bet is to play around with various filters to get it where you like it. Also, you can use "pitch" and other adjustments to make your own voice sound a little different when doing multiple calls.

 

As for effects, I've had good luck simply goggling a desired effect, say "sound inside of a helicopter", or "50 cal gun noise", and simply putting my mic right up into the headphones and recording via Audacity. Given that you aren't looking for hi-fi stereo quality (its background noise in a radio call), it works! Good luck...
