Cyclic-Stick freezes after Trim

BiBa

Recommended Posts

In 30% of Trim use, the Cyclic-Stick freezes totally and can only get loose after a Trim-Reset and sometimes by itself after 5 seconds which is fatal when flying in low altitude. As far as understood this Trim is a Force-Release as substitute for the constant pressure laid on the Spring-Joystick which is a very good solution for that... I have no idea what is causing it, as it happens without any influence of pushing other Key-Commands, and also still happening after the latest update of yesterday 1.2.4.12547.

Beyond that the Option/Special/Central Position Trimmer Mode supposes to centralize the Yaw - Roll - Pitch, which it does with the exception of pitch; after Trim-Reset it still has a strong backward pitch that leads to a fast backward drift. I know this is a cheat option, yet as most user have Spring-Joystick, it's a really good help only if it also centralizes the pitch to "neutral", especially when considered how often it's needy to restart from Hover position without having to make a deep Pitch-Trim re-adjustment.

I wanted to attach a "LastMissionTrack.trk" file, but I couldn't find the "Eagle Dynamics\Ka-50\Temp" neither in:

C:\Users\BiBa\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\?

nor the Ka-50\Temp in:

C:\Program Files\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\?

So where else is this Ka-50\Temp to be found?

Hi Biba.

Since no one has answered this yet, I guess I'll have a shot.

First of, your tracks (if you're using Win 7) should be in the C:/users/"name"/Saved Games/DCS directory.

As far as the trim reset goes, the trim reset should only be used if you feel that you have messed up your trim so far that you need a full reset. The reset will only put your trim back in the default position, not a neutral position from which you can hover. This function doesn't even exist in the real aircraft IIRC.

The trim button of the Ka-50 is a real part of the helicopter and not just a function to release tension for spring joysticks as you say. In fact, if you have an FFB stick, the stick should recenter on it's own every time you trim.

If you're finding you're stick unresponsive after trim, it's probably because you haven't manually recentered your spring joystick after trim. If you don't do this, the stick won't respond. As I understand it, you have to imagine the stick is forcing itself to the center after trim.

Please read the links in this thread to understand how the force-trim system works: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=35444

The Central Position Trimmer Mode changes what YOU have to do with the joystick after pressing the trim button. It doesn't change what the helicopter does.

What you are describing is exactly what is supposed to happen when you have the Central Trimmer Mode turned on and press the force-trim button while in flight. The cyclic will ignore ALL inputs until you physically return your joystick and rudder pedals back to their center position.

Trim-reset should only be used on the ground after landing. Never in flight.

Thanks a lot Boris & Dave, as an FSX User who joined DCS recently, I have really confused this system with the Force Release embedded in the DODO-Sim Jet Ranger 206, (best Add-On Heli) which has a conventional Cyclic Stick and was flying it on its highest realistic level 5. It's the FSX favorite Heli for real Pilots.

After this tutorial I had a flight with the Ka-50 and it was a real peace of cake compared with a conventional helicopter, almost like a toy. But in warfare you need a toy like this to put all your concentration on the environment around you.

I think the Forum interface needs retouches where major topics like "Trimming the Ka-50" from Acedy are better filed in a transparent and easy manageable hierarchy for beginners and SNAs.

I still didn't quite get the big difference between when the Box in "Option/Special/Central Position Trimmer Mode" is checked, and when it's unchecked (standard)?

With Central Trimmer unchecked, the sim will wait a specified number of milliseconds after a press of the force-trim button before allowing the cyclic to respond to joystick inputs. If you don't center your joystick fast enough, it could lead to unwanted cyclic inputs making the helicopter oscillate.

With Central Trimmer checked, the sim waits for you to return your joystick to it's calibrated center before allowing the cyclic to respond to joystick inputs again. This removes the unwanted cyclic input issue. But might introduce other issues if your joystick is not calibrated properly.

The DodoSim 206 is an incredible add-on. I've spent many hours flying around Orbx areas with that one :)

The trim in the 206 is similar to having your Ka-50's Central Trimmer option unchecked.

You don't HAVE to use the central trimmer if you don't have a force feedback joystick. It just depends on what you are more comfortable with. I flew without it for a long time. Once i started using it though, i liked it a lot more.

That explains a lot of what I've been enduring with that Stick without Joy...

By the way it took me two months until I was able to master DodoSim 206 on level five. You must be a born Pilot by nature if only after many hours you were up for a stroll!

Haha...no, i've had the dodosim for years. It took me quite a while to get comfortable with it, as well.
