Hey guys, I have a question for y'all.

When running a mission, I honestly have no idea what I am doing. I know to keep my distance from SAM's and to try and stay away from threats, but other than that... guess-work. Is there any particular way you approach a defended target? What altitude do you fly at? What are your egress procedures? Is there a better way to avoid/handle SAM's?

A little clarification on these point would be great.

Thanks...

, Flyboy

i think most people will try and point you to MP with a nugget friendly squad. Its most likely the fastest way to pick up the tricks of the trade. Otherwise there are various docs/apps floating around with tactics, missile envelopes ect.

Hi Flyboy (Is it just me or should I rethink that greeting?)

It's nice to be able to offer advice for a change rather than always being the one befitting from it. :) I'm sure you'll get loads of great tips for this question. But for my part I wonder if this series of videos might be helpful.

This chap flies the A-10A for most of the vids, but he switches to the A-10C for the latest few. Point is though that he's telling you all the time what his tactics are and you can see his approach to different scenarios.

Hope it might be helpful for you.

Hi,

I think my question would fit the topic so I'll just post it here.

We tried Operation Bactria (MP COOP 14), Afghanistan CAS, two of us, me and my mate.

So we fly to a waypoint where is our outpost being attacked by insurgents hiding in the forest surrounding the area. We are told it's a high IR threat environment, and the deck is at 5000 feet. (It's high in the mountains).

So we both arrive, troops from the ground request strafe run and rockets, I dive from 20000 feet to maybe 17000, being very careful, and still get Igla launched at me, and few seconds later I am dead.

What would be correct approach in this scenario ?

I know people will simply say - "stay above Iglas". But I find it difficult to agree with..

The weapon loadout is 2 laser bombs, 2 IAMs, 1 maverick, and 1 rocket launcher with 7 rockets..

Are we supposed to be dropping IAMs or LGBs onto infantry hiding in the forests? And there are so many of them I simply don't have enough bombs to kill so many small targets spread out over the area. So an obvious choice would then be strafing or rockets. But if the deck is 5000 feet, and Igla's effective altitude is ~13000, this basically means I have minimum safe altitude of 18000 feet - kinda difficult to hit anything from that far away ?

What would you do in this case?

Is that mission suited for just 2 pilots? Anyway.

If you have to stay high, you should use the bombs. LGBs and JDAMs hit their targets from that altitude just fine. If you run out of bombs fly back to base and rearm.

And: You could change the loadout via the Rearm menu before you take off and load up on standoff weapons. Avoid the CBU-87 as it kills next to nothing.

I am not able to do this because I have a limited amount of internet... Thanks for the input though.

Engagement tactics are the least documented things i found for modern air to ground fighters.

Maybe someone has found a real document in which this knowledge is explained and is willing to share it with the rest of the community.

The only things i found, which are really helpful (especially the weapon employment part) can be found here.

But in those documents you dont find any "tactics" for ATG-Engagements.

A common issue for many of us. A high ping rate will only make the situation worse for everybody in the server so I stick with SP and try to learn by myself with docs and video tutorials.
