Hi my first post here after lurking for a while.

I have been trying the Dragon training pack's Jtac daytime training mission (on my own as a single A10).

JTAC gives me coordinates and i find the targets on the TGP, however they say they will lase the target.

I make sure the laser ID matches on the TGP and search after trasmitting "laser On" to JTAC but, the actual point JTAC is lasing is a point only about 50 metres away from the JTAC itself (about 2km away from the actual target.)

Is this something im doing wrong or is it a problem with the mission?

Thanks

ENO, now you mention the terrain blocking. There was alot of buildings surrounding the JTAC so maybe that is the problem, I tried the mission twice and the same thing happened.

Darkwolf, I was using freq 41.000 I think its axeman 1-1, its in the briefing as the first listed JTAC at the medium difficulty training zone, I had trouble getting them to talk to me at first, just make sure you are transmitting using the correct radio and selecting the correct JTAC in the radio menu.

just a quick update.

Tried this again but used the second JTAC at the medium training zone (freq 42.000) that lased perfectly so I presume ENO is correct in saying that the first JTAC (freq 41.000) is being blocked by buildings or terrain.

Acquiring laser

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but you guys seem to know somewhat how to do what I'm trying to do. How do you acquire the signal of the JTAC to train your bombs on his designation?

I can only guess but for the sake of a quick answer I would say it's LSS (Laser Spot Search?) in the TGP. I wasn't aware that lases from JTACs are modded at all, I will have to try that soon.

Everyday somethin new! :)

drz400dude, make sure the TGP is searching for the correct laser code given to you by JTAC in the 9 line (usually 1688 ). Make sure your TGP is "looking" in the general direction of the targets and then hit the LSS button on the TGP. It should acquire the laser quite quickly.

Related questions:

When JTAC lases the target and you acquire the lase and the TGP is actively tracking that point - is that lase good enough for a GBU-12/10 drop or do you still have to lase it yourself.

What is the benefit of an active lase from JTAC versus simply sending you the coordinates? My guess is because it helps track moving targets that may no longer be in the coordinate area?

Does the Dragon Training Pack go into detail about what all the laser/JTAC related communications mean (SPOT/SHIFT/TERMINATE/etc.)?

1. Yes it's fine

2. If the JTAC lases then the bomb should hit where he wants it and there will be no mistakes. More applicable in real world but kind of cool in game.

3. From my memory no

Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing

Thanks! How do you input the laser code? The CDU?

For the TGP, go into AG mode and I think OSB 1 (one that says options or settings or something similar) should open up a settings page. On the left hand side there is LSS and one that says something else to do with the laser I think (this sets the code the laser fires on, not what the TGP searches for). Type 1688 or whatever's needed in the UFC or CDU and click the button that says LSS. This will change the code the TGP searches for. 1688 is the default so I doubt you'll ever have to change it with AI JTACs.

This is just my recollection, I haven't used those settings for ages.

That's actually not enough, you would have to set the bombs guidance to the correct laser code in the DSMS page. The number below the GBU stations is the code they are set to.

Also, you don't really HAVE to use the LSS, you can just make a quick bomb run on an area without getting the TGP on the target (if you're in a hurry).
