Ok first mission: AirCavFullMission.miz

 

Loaded in, tried to select Player Unit #2 - 'Unable to enter vehicle: vehicle control is not available'

 

Then tried to enter Player Unit #1. Loaded into vehicle( when this happens it sounds like someone dropped the helicopter onto the metal grating ).

 

My DCS did not crash ... See next post for the server info( as the forums only allow for 15000 characters per post :( )

Thanks for the feedback.

 

Are you the only player, or are several people flying cooperatively? I am asking because I have never had any problems entering a helicopter when I am the only player. I have tried it when I was hosting my mission, and switching helos by first becoming a spectator, then selecting a different helo. Never an issue. I see in your logs further below that you joined sometimes as "Soldier M4". Does that mean you are running CA also? I don't, do you think this might cause the problems "driving player number 2". There is nothing special about player number 2...

Are you the only player, or are several people flying cooperatively? I am asking because I have never had any problems entering a helicopter when I am the only player. I have tried it when I was hosting my mission, and switching helos by first becoming a spectator, then selecting a different helo. Never an issue.

I am the only one trying to get in, and this is happening immediately upon entering a vehicle. Is your server Hosted or Dedicated?

I see in your logs further below that you joined sometimes as "Soldier M4". Does that mean you are running CA also? I don't, do you think this might cause the problems "driving player number 2". There is nothing special about player number 2...

I do have CA, but unless you added the possibility for 'Player can control' to the ground units, this shouldn't be an issue( i.e. checked the box in ME for this option ). As far as I can see, as I have had CA for 2 days now, players with CA can't just join a server and select units. There has to be at least one unit set for Observer, JTAC, Ground Commander or Game Master. I could be wrong on that though; again I have only had it for 2 days.

Hmmm ... Let me try the last mission and we'll see what happens ... In the mean time, you could try bringing a GURU, like Speed( if he has the time ), in and check it for you. Shoot him a PM and see what he says...

What I really find interesting, is in the Dedicated dcs.log, Slmod reports that the LUA in the mission is error free:

However, all 4 missions crash the server upon entering a vehicle. Mission 'AirCavFullMission.miz' and 'AirCavNoStrafe.miz' both say that I am trying to enter Unit - Solider M4, while missions 'AirCavNoStrafeNoAM.miz' and 'CSARNoMovement.miz' allow me to enter Player Unit #2.

 

I will study over these and see if I can see anything obvious( or not so obvious for that matter ). I am also going to extract the mission and look directly at the code. Sometimes it is as simple( or stupid ) as using a ' instead of a " ... :huh:

I also noticed mention of SLMod in your logs, whereas there is no mention of that in my logs (attached, for Full Mission, no crash, I am hosting and the only player on my personal home computer. I host via "Multiplayer New Server etc"). Could it be that SLMod is imcompatible with my lua code, which is based on mist?

 

Would you be willing to fly the mission with me while I am hosting it sometime tonight or tomorrow (I am on US central time). Any time works for me, just need to know ahead because I have m,any other chores to do this weekend. My feeling is more and more that the fact that missions never crash on my computer is related to a difference in setup. I do not have teamspeak3 setup on my computer. Would I have to set this up first, or can we use another TS3 server?

I have a TS3 server( always up - rented ). I am in Chicago, so I am CST/CDT as well ... I am available ALL day - can't buy new toys on the summer sale, and not dedicate a whole day to play with them! :smartass:

 

I think I may have found something ... reviewing the logs, there seems to be a problem with the FARP. I am going to try removing the FARPs and just using the airbase.

GOT IT (we think)

 

Sven and I did MP bug hunting all afternoon. The good news, we think we figured it out (and it looks like it wasn't a bug after all). Here is what we learned:

 

1) The code as posted here in this thread earlier generates 16 groups of randomly positioned enemy AAA near the beginning of the mission. The code crashes. If one reduces the number of AAA groups, say to 4, the code runs fine. Our theory: there is a maximum number of total groups that can be on a map. (does anyone know if this is really the case, and what that maximum number of groups is?). The safest option therefore would be to simply completely remove the AAA groups, then you will have some more room for groups that get generated in real-time during the mission (each pilot down adds two groups, the pilot and the enemy Charlie group that will attack you as you rescue the pilot), each convoy will generate another group (the spotter group) once it got detected, and so on. All these additional units will get destroyed after their job in the mission is done. So the number of groups changes during the mission, and may lead to a crash if it exceeds a certain number. I attached a mission with I believe either 4 or 8 AAA groups that does not crash, but as I pointed out earlier it could crash later on if the number of groups grows during the mission. The safest thing may just be to completely remove all the AAA groups, this is done by simply deleting the trigger that loads the "createEnemyAAA2.lua" code. Otherwise, open the "intialization and common routines" lua file with note++, and change the global variables that specify the total number of AAA, convoys, etc. You may also try to remove some groups from the ME itself.

 

2) At some point we had problems when SLMOD is running on the server. This led to an immediate crash upon entering the mission, but reducing the number of AAA groups also made this problem disappear, so we are not sure if there is a problem or not. But disabling SLMOD is another thing you might want to try if you have crashes.

Sorry for the misunderstanding ... for the record, SLMOD did not cause any crashing( sorry Speed - great addition to MP Server Administration! :thumbup: ).

 

We think it has been finally nailed down. Here is a list of our findings:

  • Player Group #2 had a UnitID set to that of a solider. For those that have read all my other findings, this is why when I tried to join this ship, it told me that I was trying to enter Soldier M4. In single player it seemed to work fine; see below for Single vs Multi-player.
    • We removed Player Group #2, and then added back Player Group #2, with its own uniqued ID. This seems to have allowed for this unit to now be accessable in MP.

    [*]The scripts were calling in, dynamically, several groups of units, in groups of 16; ranging from soldiers to AAA. However, this seemed to crash the server/clients when joining; see below for Single vs Multi-player.

    • We lowered the number of unit groups to 4( or 8 - don't remember now ), to accommodate the 'limit' of groups allowed in MP; what ever it is.

    [*]Each player had their own callsign; i.e - Springfield 1-1, Uzi 1-1, Dodge 1-1, etc. This seemed to also conflict with the dynamically generated and static units.

    • We changed all PLAYER units to be Springfield 1-1, 2-1, 3-1 and 4-1 respectfully. As we suspected there was a conflict with the dynamic and static air units, and the lack of additional callsigns.

    [*]Once we eliminated the Dynamic AAA Group, as noted by wolle's post above, we were able to play for some bit and then the server/client would crash. This seemed to be caused by a limit of DCS, on the total amount of ACTIVE GROUPS allowed in the game at one time.

    • We re-added the AAA script, and lowered the amount to be spawned; for the AAA and for other units.

    [*]Once the crashing stopped, we then ran into then random 'Client Update failed' error. We suspected server lag at first, though I connect via LAN( so that wasn't it ), and then realized it was a script issue, and that more, and more groups were spawning: thus hitting the allowed group limit.

    • wolle re-wrote several lines in the lua files to alleviate some of the 'congestion'.

    [*]F-10 menu items would appear for some, but not others.

    • wolle re-wrote this, and now ALL players have their 'own' F-10 menu; with the ability to request troops, request current location, unload troops, force smoke 'pop-ing', and request the current task/to-do list.

    [*]Some downed pilots, or groups reinforcement's ADF was not properly being registered.

    • Re-wrote triggers to properly get ADF set to find these guys. **You still have to tune your ADF radio manually, this is only for the target to send out the signal! ***

 

I suspect that the reason this seemed to work in Single Player verses Multi-Player, is that MP may reserve 32 groups for a possible 32 player server. This would then take away from the total allowed groups, thus the crashes. I could be wrong, and again we can't find any limits for the Mission Editor, nor the DCS Game Engine itself. We do know that there is a limit. If anyone can shed some light on this, it would be much appreciated.

 

I will be releasing the latest version for the public today( as per wolle's request - he is going on holiday and will be gone for a bit ). However, before I do, I would like some of you to come to my server and test it in a 'normal' MP environment. I would like to see how stable it is before I/We say it is fixed( again ).

 

I need some people to play, as I will be monitoring the server all day. If I see that it is stable, with 3-4 people flying, I will post back here, with the map file, for others to add to their own server.

Ok, after a little bit of testing myself, I have found that the mission will run out of 'things to do' after about 2 hours, so the mission will need to be reloaded/restarted. I have also noticed that some of the units are not the brightest, and will exit the helicopter, or try to enter for that matter, near the tail rotor - thus effectively killing themselves! Another thing I noticed, was that if too many units are attempted to be 'handled' by the player, but unsuccessful, the requested 'to-do list' will stop showing the full list, and just echo out 'There are XX pilots down'.

 

All of these little things will be taken care of, and so far I haven't had a crash in either the Player Client or the Server. Only one other person has joined since this post, so the two of us were flying for a bit, but them it was just me. Grazie Sprinter! ;-) I will be in and out of the server, as the day progresses, but would still really appreciate 2-4 people to play in it for sometime. Thanks all ...

We are still getting 'Update Player timeout', but suspect that this is due to DCS servers showing REALLY high pings, all around. Will keep you posted on future updates.

Unfortunately not yet ... The only issue that we are trying to hunt down, is why it just all of a sudden disconnects everyone.

 

If you would like to test map, you can join the server posted above, and fly all you like. But rather than release another broken copy, we would like to nail this last problem. Then everyone can download, and we can focus on more updates/functionality( or wolle can, as it is his map originally ).

If you want I can fire it onto mine, see if it disconnects people at all!

 

I'll be on around 4.30pm EST.

 

We have already tested it on a couple different computers, and the random booting persists. I would rather keep it in a 'controlled' environment( i.e. one computer ), while the testing happens, as it - in theory - will make hunting down the cause easier.

 

I will be adding some debug scripts today, and hopefully can see what is going on, when it kicks everyone. I have also noticed that this map leaves weird ME icons on the F-10 map screen. I am assuming that the LUA code is not properly terminating, and this could be the reason that the Clients quit updating.

 

Could definitely use your help, again, marker! And others too, should they fancy. 4:30 EST, is 3:30 Chicago time, and I will be here! You can just jump in TS when you're ready. ;)

Hey guys - i'm pretty new to DCS Huey. When I play this mission, and there's a radio call coming in, all I hear is LOUD static noise. is there supposed to be voice or if not, how do I turn down the static radio noise?
