Today as I was getting shot down by mig 29's and struggling to maintain 300 knots in my a10 I thought to myself that maybe sending A10's into an area where there are multiple sams and fighter jet threats, just isn't a good idea. Are the single player missions really that realistic? I cant see sending an airplane in which struggles to climb when loaded into an environment with mach 2 fighter jets and sam systems. I think it is most realistically and deadly in close in troop CAS missions where the largest threat would be RPG's and/or rifle fire.

I'm not putting the thunderbolt down or anything because I think it is great at what it does. Just hard to think they would ever use it in a modern day war against a enemy with modern tech. Seems, the strike eagle would be a more viable option.

How about a new engine mod with twice the thrust and stronger wings! A10 thunderbolt III...!

Realism is relative, I'm not a pilot but I can tell you with absolute surety that armoured and infantry combat are not remotely realistically simulated (dont take it personally, neither is arma 2, constraints with the AI?) so actual CAS therefore is not accurate. but fundamentals of mission planning seem relatively "close enough". So if you are having to deal with a dense SAM threat and getting bounced by the CAP at the same time it shows a lack of mission planning. Threats are treated by tactics.

It sounds like you are refering to the shore campaign? The main threats are the s-300 and the CAP, stay at low altitude, and keep an ear out to the AWACS if the migs are beading a line to you. You do have fighter cover, but you need to be careful calling for it since they generally get shot down by the s-300 batteries.

The a-10 was designed to operate in a contested environment. Though not if the enemy had air superiority.

This is the exact reason we are playing DCS. It is as accurate as an PC sim can. Don't go to the other side where MMO's are, we do not need balancing just for dogfight A10 vs SU-27 ...

As dumgrunt already stated, reserve some more time for planning.

In 100% agreement with both of you. I always listen for AWACS calls, order "Flight" to attack buggy men in the area before entering. If they come after I enter leave allowing the fighters to take them out, I even help them sometimes as long as the boggy is engaged sending another missile his way doesn't hurt. (Well.........Me anyway).
