Prophet_169th Posted February 9, 2006 Posted February 9, 2006 I would imagine the software for this is entirely too complex for my dino brain to understand. But it I know it has to be beyond locking the highest heat source. If that was the case, all you would have to do is shut down the vehicle and throw some IR chem lights out, or an IR beacon. And from the thermal sights I have used for TOW, you would be surprised at how much heat trees buildings and the ground radiate, compared to a vehicle, even with engines running. Be glad you dont get radiation from the trees, finding targets would be much much harder. Realism anyone?
S77th-GOYA Posted February 9, 2006 Posted February 9, 2006 How often do you think the sun is near the center of the seeker while a hog jockey is trying to lock a tank? Before you answer, let me limit the question to tanks that are on the ground, where you would usually find them. No cloud tanks please.
nscode Posted February 9, 2006 Posted February 9, 2006 :D How about tanks on top of a hill early in the mornin ;) The sun wasn't the point anyhow.. Ough, and cloud tanks... why sign off cloud tanks... shooting down slow flying targets.. right there in the things description :p Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
GGTharos Posted February 9, 2006 Posted February 9, 2006 True enough. But do you think the software is written to ignore the highest heat signatures? If anything, common sense tells you that the software would jump the lock from the cooler object to the hotter one rather than the other way around. I don't know how the real thing would work, but my guess is the criteria are: Enough threshold, enough pixels, closest to designator. That's it. In LOMAC, and most other games, it likely locks onto to simply whatever's closest to the designator (by xyz center OR area), no other parameters are taken into account, IMHO. nscode Posted February 9, 2006 Posted February 9, 2006 AGM-65 A/B guidance sub-system (extract from operatin/maintenance manual, in Serbian): This doesn't tell you much details, but can help you grasp on how complicated it is.. Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
