Using broken Saitek Combat Rudder Pedals with Bodnar board?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I have a broken set of Saitek Combat Rudder Pedals. :(

Is is possible to connect the pot for rudder output to a Bodnar board and continue using the pedals?

Toe brakes are no problem, I do not want them. It is only the rudder function I need. Any help greatly appreciated!

Found this thread although no precise details in it.

Which Bodnar board should I get? Cheapest possible of course.

Sure that's possible. If the pot is still working.

Yes pot works!

Which Bodnar board should I get?

Will this the BU0836A 12-Bit Joystick Controller be OK for this purpose? 12-bit resolution is standard?

This one:

And also I do recommend to change your pot with something like this:

http://www.mycockpit.org/forums/showthread.php?t=22267

For this you need a hall sensor which can be directly connected to Leo board from here: http://www.leobodnar.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=82&products_id=195

The result will be an astonishing precision which will never (well... almost never) dies :D

OK that is just too much work for me. I want to use the existing pot. Will the BU0836A 12-Bit Joystick Controller be enough for me?

this one will be more then enough for rudder pedals and cheaper as well: http://www.leobodnar.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=66&products_id=204

i'd say even 10-bit controller is enough for rudder pedals, but it's "

DISCONTINUED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE." on that website.

Thank you for the advice! I will now order it.

sold out.... argh..

Ordered this one instead --> BU0836-LC Load Cell Joystick Controller

Bu0836-LC is intended for raccing simmers - load cell for brakes - due this is more expensive and dont have any advantage for your use.

Same for BU0836X - is more expensive (~double) , and his only advantage is make more easy connect the buttons (without diode use) - that you dont plan use.

The cost/effective for your use is BU0836A (12 bits) - since BU0836 is discontinued.

L.Bodnar offer other alternative for you case - rewire a rudder pedal - is

Pedal Cable for Logitech G25/G27/DFGT/DFp or Generic Pedals Adapter,

dont offer advantage in cost (is 2$ cheap than BU0836A) but is a more

"elegant" solution for rudder pedal only.

His only "drawback" is the need to wire pedal potentiometers to DB-15

connector, for plug in DB-15 adapter connector:

In short is a 3 axis only controller, for use for rudder, right/left brakes (plane pedal), or throttle, clutch and brake (car pedal).

It was only today the website indicated they have the BU0836A back in stock. I emailed them to ask if possible to change from BU0836-LC to BU0836A as the latter is more general. Haven't received a reply yet. May be that my order has shipped already. Doesn't matter, it is only the analog part I'm after.

The adapter you linked is not an option for me.

I ordered the MFG Crosswind, the modded Saiteks with Bodnar board will be in use until I get the proper pedals. They seems to be a perfect fit for helicopter pilots. Smooth and no center stud/bump.

Fixed the pedals today with the Bodnar board. They work as they should now. Got a fright first when I started DCS because my collective jittered back and forth. Discovered (again) that DCS mapped all the functions on the Bodnar board to commands. Had to clear each map/bind except the "JOY X" which is for the rudder. Happened with the Saitek pedals too when the original circuit board was still used.

The rudders are much better now, no center bump, smooth and no jittering or crazy inputs.

;)

Straight forward procedure getting it connected. Checked the cables (+5V, GND, ANALOG IN), pre-tinned the cables and the connector which came with the board. I just use one screw for the board inside the pedal housing.

Artur, nice work. thumbup.gif

On L.Bodnar page have for download a utilty that allow set automatic axis detection - only axis with potentiometers/sensors connected are enable for Windows/games.

Which program is that? So I can hide all the other buttons, axis that are not in use?

Is the "BU0836 Configuration", tick the box in "Miscelaneous".

2BU0836A_03.jpg

http://www.leobodnar.com/products/BU0836/BU0836%20configuration.exe

With this you hide unused axis.

Buttons no, but since they are "normaly open circuit", only be seen in games if you "close" the circuit (press some button).

About axis, some old (90's) games only see USB controller if ther have at least X an Y axis, I think that for DCS this dont matter.

Thanks a lot!

It doesn't seem to work with the LC variant of the board. Thanks anyways!
