The AI gunners, both door gunners & co-pilot, are far too good! They are able to see through woods etc & destroy opposition at a fantastic rate. I am certain in real life that this in unrealistic. Perhaps their unerring accuracy should be toned down somewhat, in the interests of realism. Otherwise a great sim the mods to flight handling in 1.2.7 make it even better.

Would be great if we could assign a separate AI skill level to each crew member (http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=118054)

All AI units can see through trees. The only difference is that this time they are in your aircraft.

On the bright side, at least they are not useless... Also I think all AI in DCS can see through the forest. There was a time when I was trying to hide from a tank behind the forest but the tank still able to see and shoot at me through the forest. :noexpression:

I am still very much learning the UH1, and I came upon this topic after trying to figure out why my AI gunners are so terribly lousy. Needless to say I was surprised to read that they were too good. Mine can't hit the broad side of a barn. The copilot on the Flex mounts sometimes engages random targets up to 6000 m away, while ignoring closer targets. And he can't hit anything, close or far. Door gunners are equally bad. I thought it might have been that I wasn't flying steady enough but even with Level Autopilot on, it is still no better. The AI gunner accuracy is set at 100%, and the results are still not good. When manning the guns myself, or even when firing from the pilots side with fixed mounts, hitting something with a mini-gun is almost as easy as spraying them with a hose, so something seems very wrong with the AI accuracy. Am I doing something wrong, or was there something changed in recent versions to make them this bad?

They used to be too good. But then something changed a while ago. The last time I checked, they tend to engage a spot on the ground and depending on the skill % set in the mission editor, they are somewhat spraying around that spot or even (at 100%) seem to be laser accurate hitting that spot. The problem there: it is somewhat random if that spot coincidences with an actual target ....

This leads to the paradox situation that they are more effective when you set them to a lower skill % (like 50 % or so) - that way they spray around and so they hit the real targets at least by pure luck then and when ...

Has this been reported as a bug? I just now tried out the Ground Attack - Easy instant mission and flew over one of the enemy truck collumns at a fairly slow speed, on Level Autopilot. None of the 3 gunners made a single hit. While manning the flex mounts myself, I got 6 or 7 of the trucks on one pass. So their accuracy isn't just bad, it is downright appalling! I hope they fix it, because having AI crewmembers man the guns effectively while the pilot flies the copter is an essential part.

I think, it was reported. (edit: yes, it was: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=130894)

BUT ... I just tried it right now myself. And, what shall I say, what I wrote is - in my eyes - obsolete and that bug seems to be fixed.

At least I had no problems with the AI gunners now. I engaged a column of 5t fuel trucks. At 100% copilot took them out in a few seconds. Similar for the door gunners (took them a bit longer, but probably because I was not lining up for them properly all the time).

Then, when set to 60% (!) they were less effective - but each took out the column without too much troubles. At 60% they walked the rounds around and it looked almost as if they tried to walk them onto the targets. Looked in that regard quite more realistic than when they almost sniped them when at 100%.

Perhaps you should post a track?

I just set up a quick mission with some unarmored trucks and some lightly armored vehicles. I set gunner accuracy at 97%. I could see the M60 door gunners making lots of hits, they didn't seem so bad. The copilot flex gunner was very mediocre at best. He had very little trouble nailing targets directly ahead, and steady in my own fixed sight (I might as well have just taken them out myself), after a fairly long run in from a steeper angle, but he was not very good at targets off center at all, especially when the attack angle was shallow. He was able to walk the guns up to a target, but not walk them side to side with any skill. And I found that if I had even a slight amount of anti-torque pedal in, he couldn't hit anything.
