  3. I have 1.1, w00t for me :p Well, so I thought, screw the r-60 or the r-73, I'll use my Vikhrs to kill those pesky choppers, but when I tried to lock them with the shkval, it did nothing. I can however lock onto, and kill planes, but it's impossible to lock onto choppers (mi-24) Oh well, im off playing 1.1, let's see how good that 25t is at crashing

  7. Basically in this mode everything still works, but nothing moves (aircraft, missiles, etc). So you can change weapons, hud modes etc, lock on to a target, change your mind, check the manual, realise you chose the wrong weapon, try another, turn the manual the right way up, try it all again... you get the idea ;-) It's not realistic, obviously. But there's more to a sim than 100% realism, and as a learning tool for complex weaponry and avionics, this would be invaluable. I seem to remember Janes' F/A-18 had the same thing. It's been a while since I flew it though, so I may be wrong. Of course the Mother of All training aids were the tutorials in Longbow 1 & 2. I can still hear that bloke's voice in my head. Scary. "To engage eye-hadz mode, press the <pause> eye key". Yes sir! Sorry I didn't press it sooner. The manual fell off my lap and I lost the right page and... "Climb to 100 feet and hover. Notice..." But I haven't done the IHADS things yet. What key was it again? And notice what? "Climb to 100 feet!" All right, already! Give me a break. I didn't sign up for this. They said I'd see the world. All I've seen so far is a dusty bit of Nevada (is there any other kind?), and the only excercise I've had for two weeks is carrying the manual to the bathroom for extensive study. Where's the foreign travel, the exotic women, the Hershey bars available 24/7 in any US base across the planet? And what happened to... "Climb to 100 feet!" Do I get the Hershey bar then? 9.

  11. You're thinking of the wrong physics. Summary of the law: Smaller aperture=bigger dispersion angle. Therefore the image is spread out more. This is also true of lasers - the smaller the aperture, the wider the dot gets with the distance...larger aperture, the more 'constant' the size of the dot. This is the same for all waves, including the ones you can make happen in the water, or in the air, which means that sound is included (essentially, any sort of vibration will obey this law)

  13. F-15 Iff (edited after Kula66's reply) I had thought there was no IFF in TWS for the F-15, however it looks like I was wrong and that the symbology is there in TWS, but it is extremely faint for some strange reason. However, there still is no way to IFF in STT outside of using the NCTR, which is insufficient when fighting in an environment where the same plane may be found on either side. Here's a scan from an old Jane's manual for reference. Yes this is the APG-70 in the F-15E, but I'm just using it to demonstrate the symbology here. Note the part about a friendly designated target flashing from circle to star.

  15. Dear Sardukar, If there is a local distributor in Australia who would like to act as a distributor for the retail version of Flaming Cliffs, then email me their contact details. Eagle Dynamics has an open distribution policy. Jim

  16. Watch the Archer video. The AIM-120 fired in it lofts. Also send me a PM with your email ... I'll send you a PDF. I'll have to try and find the site I was reading up on radar again (also the F4 manual states that, after paying money for various research docs, they found out that ARH fares better in low level environments ... it had to do something with the monopulse radar and the fact that it is an ARH missile, but the explanation didn't go into details - it's basically possible that the ARH missile can use MTI more effectively IMHO) You might be right on HoJ, I'll have to re-read about the cross-eyed jamming, though they definitely mentioned that 'the missile is the forced to swich to less efficient proportional navigation' ... It also showed some burn-through graphs as well (indeed, the Burn-through range it'sn that great, but the key was that you don't need to actually completely overpower the jammer to get around it - one example graph had BT at 13nm or so) This was on a NAVY mil site and it was used to help RADAR engineers, IIRC.

  17. Without getting into specifics, some Western RWRs show the threat on the inner ring and others on the outer. The advantages of displaying a threat on the outer is that it gives you better angle of arrival definition. Also, it is difficult for RWRs to display range as most radars have different power settings. That's why most fighter RWRs show Search, Threat & Launch on rings vice relative range. Now on the dedicated ELINT gatherers that's a different story. As for the S-300+ series, when you get an acq and/or tracking radar associated with it you make sure you avoid that area. Plain and simple. It's way too dangerous to confront. For gameplay, although not realistic I agree that a missile launch tone would make things easier. Just as long as the map isn't littered by S-300s!
