  2. Helicopter simulators are my gaming bread n butter. I love them. So, on the release of DCS: Black Shark (counting down the weeks) I was thinking of updating my current dodgy Logitech Wingman Pro, which I have had for about 5 years, to something more relevant. The immersion factor of gaming with these devices is an important aspect of enjoying this grand hobby of ours. So my fellow gamers, what joystick do you recommend for enjoying chopper sims? I found the ‘MRVC Helicopter USB Controls’ at http://www.simcontrol.co.uk/newheli.htm . It looks pretty cool and I am saving my pennies for this, but is there anything cheaper (it's about 1500 pounds), better, or recommended that would surpass this rig? I'm also keen to see what the developer's and beta testers use on the daily grinding (lucky sods) on playing DCS: BS? What do you use?

  3. Hello, Apparently, it started in 1975 with about half the payload and half the weight as a two seat design. It then went through further single seat iterations (competing with the V-100 paper design), including a four winged version, before finally being built. Really quite interesting, I found someone who has good references and knowledge about these Kamov helicopters. We are discussing the initial V-80 design variants: http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,3125.0.html S!

  6. A couple of comments about the cost of development. 1. Greystork's analysis of the tasks involved is a good summary for developing an AI aircraft, but do not underestimate the research work that is necessary even before even one line of code is written for a new aircraft. 2. The cost of development is not the base salary x manyears. If any of you are thinking of running your own business, and charge your time out at salary, then you will go bankrupt very quickly! As a rule of thumb you need take (salary+employment costs) x 2 in order to pay for all the overheads:- offices, management, sales and marketing, administration, taxes etc etc. Example: EA's financials for the last announced quarter (June 2007) Sales $395M Cost of Goods $137M Development $250M (note: in addition some development is charged to the Balance Sheet) Admin $153M [EA made a loss in that quarter, but will make it up in the next 2 quarters - holiday season) 3. A new AI aircraft does not make any revenue, unless the community would like to pay for it! 4. Russian labor costs for high quality programmers may ten years ago have been much cheaper than in the West, but now it is not significantly so - Try taking a shopping trip to Moscow to see what goods cost! 5. Game Development costs are now typically $5M-$15M spread across 1 -3 systems (PC, PS3, XBOX 360). Unfortunately not every title can get into the world top ten and sell 1M+ units, it is a risky business!

  7. Would like to see more choppers in this poll. AH-1 Cobra, AH-6 Littlebirds, Blackhawks, Tigers, AC330 Super Puma's, anything with rotor's. The most exciting thing about DCS series in my eye's is that it's starting out as a helicopter study sim, something us rotorfanboys haven't had in a very long time. Wanna fly the F 16? Then play Falcon 4. I say (in my humble opinion) leave the Lock On planes in Lock On. LOMAC isn't an old game, so it doesn't need to be updated into DCS till way later. Try something new. If the developers are going to add planes with a 'ground attack' element, then why not the Tornado? If popularity and sales is an issue (like all game developing) then why not try the FA 18 super hornet, or the old school F-14D Tomcat and do a heap of carrier missions and J-DAM strikes. Since Janes: F18 there hasn't been a cool carrier sim with any realism. Also the Apache AH64D model would be more fun to fly in then the A model, but thats just from my readings. I see the best thing about DCS is that it's trying to be something new. Encourage that.
