Hog, don't get me wrong: as I said I think the Mustang is a very nice addition, and I would completely agree with you about its merits!
-
Sorry, but the whole idea of having a WW2 map in the DCS series totally escapes me. I sure do hope we are not on the way to a WW2 sim, I have no intentions to end up between the IL-2 crowd to meet my son and his online buddies. I might as well start to read the CloD forums! I thought that DCS was about accurately modelling combat aircraft. The P-51D will be a very nice addition, moddeling aspects of flight currently not addressed in the series. Not that I would mind if creative mission designers added such scenario's or made dedicated server to it; just to make clear I can have a genuine interest in DCS:Mustang without the WW2 or Korea link.

As I understood it, it is about simulating to fly a P-51D in combat today. It is as if you would have restored an original P-51D, not just for fying displays at an airshow, but with its full military capabilty. But we are still flying it today in a moderrn-day environment. That's why I would find it logical to add an optional portable GPS or digital (evt. moving) map. And of course I would expect a modern day UHF/VHF radio set. I just simply cannot imagine flying a P-51D today without these simple, cheap and readily available tools. That doesn't mean it can be fun to navigate the old way, as we do all the time with the vanilla Su-25 in Lockon. But imho this is not meant as a WW2 simlator, but I could be wrong.

Now that was an easy poll! Phantom Phorever!!!

Laser guided rockets are long overdue on the battlefield imho! Seems the logical thing to do!

What do you think about P-51D and Flying Legends?

They are waiting until it is a heritage aircraft :D -
What do you think about P-51D and Flying Legends?

I already found a shovel in the garden that could serve as a yoke! Saves me 400 $ on a Hotas Warthog :D -
Anyways the P-51D has the better whistle!

I remember in the beginning of Flaming cliffs we got performance charts comparing the turn performance of A-10A and Su-25. I wonder about the performance comparison between A-10C and P-51. Wikpedia gives them about the same speed, but I bet the Hog can't keep up with this noble horse? And turn performance? I feel some incredible dogfights are in the making ...
-
I must say I do like the idea of flying mixed missions online between A-10C and P-51D. Must be really awesome and gives a true COIN feeling. The A-10C can communicate to the jtack, use its sensors to identify targets and talk the P-51D in. I also think the WP rocket will become important. I'm unsure about night ops, since I guess the P-51D cockpit will not be NVG compatible? I still would advocate a small GPS receiver to be mounted in the P-51 to simplify navigation. A 600 $ GPSMAP 196 would be the first thing I would buy if I were planning to fly a warbird for an extended period of time.

DCS-51D isn't out yet and we are already starting to learn new technical details about aviation, as it has been the case with Ka-50 and A-10C! There is more logic to it than meets the eye!

Brilliant vid, you got me on board I guess!

Ok, but any seasoned salesman knows that when people start whining, they are in fact considering to buy! :=)

I suppose we need some upgrades to make the P-51D flyworthy in current highly regulated airspace. What about a Garmin GTN 750, a GTX 327 transponder and some nice UHF/VHF radio sets? A GSR 56 Satcom could complete it all! Not sure we'll manage to get an IDM though. A FADEC for the engine would be super, and don't forget the P-51D is already completely "Fly-By-Wire", allthough it is more appropriate to say "Fly-By-Cable". :=)
-
It's totally not my cup of tea but I'm supportive and think it will enrich the collection! I tried everything on WW2: BoB, IL2 in all its guises, CloD, Wing of Prey, ... everything back to the dustbin. however, I did have some fun with Realair's Spirtfire for FSX, geiven the very nice models, excellent aerobatic performance (of the spitfire, not me of course) and the sound of the the merlin engine. I guess this will be the appeal with P-51D: hopefully fantastic engine sound, incredible aerodynamic performance (one of the best designs ever!) and some engine management to work with. And then read the announcement, which really gor me wildly enthousiast: "The P-51D will be the first aircraft in the Flying Legends series that focuses on historical aircraft that have set benchmarks in combat aviation." Given this definition I for myself am already 100% convinced we will at some point have the F-4E Phantom, the absolute strike fighter *ever* to have flown the skies! :=)

But then again 200 of them would be insufficient by far, given the sheer size of the US and the fact that this will be your bread & butter machine. Not every airframe you have is available at every moment, some are undergoing maintenance, others upgrades. Look at how thin the F-22 force proves to be. Aaron is more realistic with 500-800, I would think about 1200. Depending on how many pilots you have, your airframes can be longer in the air of course even with lower flight hours / pilot. Anyway, with about 120 F-35 effectively delayed, we already know for sure that they will never buy the original figure. But that is nothing new.

A small question @speed: how did you deduce from my mission that it was 37T ? (in other words is there another way to know than tweaking the NATO.lua file?)
-
Hello Speed, Thanks for your answer. My problem was that my CDU was set to 38T. Once I changed it to 37T, it all works fine (and indeed I was mistaken about GH170284 not being in GH12). My question is now (can be a dumb one): how do I know it is 37T, since the JTAC omits the grid zone in his 9-line brief?
-
I also noticed the JTAC is a little nervous and starts yelling over the radio ... but in the end he always comes up with "you may depart" and the only thing I'm concerned with is looking though the TGP to see whether I hit the target; often you're lucky and you take out two for the price of one missile! We do need a "shut up and take cover" message :D

Still a mistery, and I guess one that is followed attentively throughout the aerospace industry. The Raptor is one of the first aircraft that uses composites in such an overwhelming way. Also, a lot of new skin materials and glues have been used. It's not abnormal that some unexpected issues with toxins arise. In a way, it's good that these issues come to light with the Raptor, it would be a whole lot more disturbing if it were on a 787! We're not even completely confident that an all composite aircraft is your best bet when entering electromagnetically disturbed airspace like a lightning storm. As with previous revolutionary techniques, it takes time to sort it all out.
