Can't get the open beta working- help welcome!
Glide replied to Finnster's topic in DCS World Tutorial & Help Requests
This is the place. I believe you can copy your entire DCS folder over to the new drive and it will launch. You can just move your regular version over. -
Working off the premise that the shader cache implementation is having issues, I decided to shrink my Visibility Range, Preload Radius, and Trees. The idea here is to minimize the amount of textures going through the mill while still keeping enough quality to make it visually pleasing. For now, these should give you the best quality/performance balance IMHO. Update, Water is not impacted by the shader cache issue, so turn it up to High to get rid of those flickering cloud reflections. I leave it low because it's ugly no matter what I do. One more way to squeeze a bit of performance out of these settings is to set Res. of Cockpit Displays to 512. They are still quite nice at 4k with these textures. YMMV.

Yes, these are quality settings you can adjust depending on the amount of VRAM you have. I have 11GB on my 1080Ti, but most of the new cards have 8 or 6gb. This limits the amount of eye candy you can push through your card. I find since I don't spend much time down near the ground in helos or with Combined Arms, I can turn off all the ground goodies.

Sure! I started out using the mission generator to create my missions. It will give you a Group of 4 T-90's, for example, and multiple groups of different types along with Groups that have only one unit in them, like a Vulcan AA unit. Remove all but one unit from the T-90 group. Then use Crtl-C and Crtl-V to balance the mission if you need more units. Do this for all the generated Groups, and the mission will be lighter, and more efficient, but still provide the same light-show entertainment. I've been doing this for my AI flights and my carrier groups for a couple of days now, and it seems to me that the AI is more aggressive as a single unit. ie. 2 single-ship flights are more aggressive than one two-ship flight. I believe it's easier to balance the missions this way.

ED SIMS SCREENSHOT AND VIDEO THREAD!!!! (NO USER MODS OR COMMENT)

The default Stennis does not have the Supercarrier goodies. Choose another carrier to get the crew on deck. If you had any statics they will not be connected to the carrier, so you will need to fix that up if you are a mission builder.

@speed-of-heat Sorry for the confusion. I don't have a G2. Yes, you can get a big boost from having shadows off, lowering textures, lowering resolution, but I am showing that even with those settings, I can get picture perfect frame rates over Syria with no stuttering AND it still looks good. My monitor is an Asus PB287Q. It's a very nice 4k monitor with a 60hz clock that reports it can do 144 hz (thru compression?). With all vsync turned off, this card can push 144 fps on Syria (not over the cities 70-80fps). With the shader cashe issue "minimized" by those settings DCS is smooth as silk and visually pleasing. The only drawback is that screenshots don't pick up the FXAA because it's post processing. You need to go windowed and do alt-printscrn to pick up the FXAA. However, I run at 4k, so my screenshots are too big to share now, so no loss. If I were inclined to dig deeper into the shader cache issue, I would put the shader cache back ON (on disk) and turn on resource monitor. Then do some black box testing. Turn on and off MSAA, SSAA, Anisotropic filtering, Trilinear Optimization, AA Transparancy, and AA Gamma correction. The culprit(s) should cause some heavy drag on the disk.

Major slutter / FPS drop linked to drop of GPU usage
Glide replied to Wendake's topic in Game Performance Bugs
Have you tried disabling shader cache in the AMD control panel? It will increase load times for missions. -
No worries, bro! I've been writing software for over 30 years, and I specialize in performance testing. There is definitely an issue with too many shader calls, and I have shown how to eliminate those from the picture as you troubleshoot your VR setup. There are a LOT of ways to set up DCS wrong, and only a few ways to get it right. I'm going to keep lurking around these VR issues because someday I will get a VR headset. I have high hopes the solution is around the corner.

I have one mission on the PG map that always dips in FPS and then recovers. I start out in Dubai Intl at 70-80pfs, but it dips down to 40 fps as I cross over to Fujairiah. I suspected the ground action was causing the dip because as units got eliminated I would see the fps rise back up to 90-100 in the dogfight portion. Deleting the ground units cleared up the dip, but wasn't very satisfying. So, I made every Group into a single unit rather than deleting them all. This cleared up the dip in fps, however the cause is still out there. Just another tip for tuning up your favorite missions. Cheers!

Sorry, bro. Thought I was helping.

Loving the new damage modeling! This Su-25T has some parts floating in space as it breaks up.

I think I broke my last post, so I will summarize again. My apologies for the duplicates. I turned off Shader Cache even though I have zippy SSD's, and this cleared up some major stuttering. Did some research on deferred shading which is used in DCS, and then I decided to test performance without any MSAA or Anisotripic filtering (anything that touches textures). I got extremely good frame rates and no stuttering at 4k. I highly recommend you try these settings. BTW, can someone tell me how to screenshot the entire NCP in one go?
-
So, disabling Shader Cache doesn't solve the performance problem; it just moves it from disk to memory. My understanding is that DCS uses deferred shading, and I was wondering if there was a way to reduce the shader calls via settings. Turning off MSAA which is expensive with deferred shading gives another boost. If you can't stand not having MSAA, FXAA is very efficient and works very well with deferred shading. At 4k, it looked just fine to me. I managed to get the highest framerates at 4k with these settings. I am curious to see if this might get the VR users past their issues until the graphics engine gets upgraded. Update: with Shadows off and FXAA on I could get 120 fps on Syria at 4k. Give it a try.

solved Visual Problem unfixed by reinstall? Unplayable

Are you running 3 screens? -
Just an update on this. I took the Jug for a ride over the Channel today, and I got some very high frame rates. I have vsync turned off completely with shader cache disabled AND track file writing disabled in my autoexec.cfg. I absolutely crush 120 fps over Damascus on the Syria map. I sure hope the VR users get their performance issues sorted because there's no doubt in my mind that DCS can pump out fps.

My 1080Ti howls a bit. I keep the sides off the case to keep it cool. I'll give it a go. Update: thx for the suggestion. My 1080Ti fans did not howl on Maximum Performance.
